Transmission Substation Engineer Job

TRANSMISSION SUBSTATION ENGINEER opportunity for a LONG TERM CONTRACT position with Yoh's client located in Raleigh, NC.

THE BIG PICTURE

- IN SEARCH OF A HIGH ENERGY, MOTIVATED DESIGNER TO JOIN THE TRANSMISSION SUBSTATION ENGINEERING UNIT AT DUKE ENERGY PROGRESS.
- FOR POWER TRANSMISSION FACILITIES OF 69 KV THROUGH 500 KV, RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

- Developing substation design standards suitable for the engineering and construction of new and/or modification of existing electric power substations
- Assisting with structural and foundation analyses for components used in the substation
- Developing and maintaining sufficient level of expertise in the use of CADD software for the efficient production of substation design standards
- Ensuring that the substation standards meet all applicable safety and environmental regulations.
- The best possible design standards for transmission substation facilities considering all environmental, land use, engineering and economic factors and in accordance with the approved schedule
- Design standards with detail and precision to develop high quality standards for work activities on assigned projects to meet the requirements of the Project Manager
- Work assignments in a manner consistent with both the Duke Energy Safety Manual as well as with Federal, State, and local laws
- All project activities and work activities in a sound and cost-effective manner that contributes to the safety of Company employees and the public, reliability of service, and reasonable protection of the environment.
- Develop design standards to be used on projects ranging from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple work assignments simultaneously to ensure adherence to the approved schedule. (45%)
- Analyze routine engineering scenarios and perform necessary design calculations to comply with applicable codes and sound engineering practices. Apply engineering theories to design physical, functional, and electrical systems. Develop design standard drawings, details with complete bill-of-materials, and written construction specifications. (20%)
- Conduct detailed technical and financial studies and analyzes alternatives to determine proper equipment and/or applications. Develop, update and revise design standard construction drawings and engineering templates (15%)
- Develop and maintain design standards by soliciting feedback and input from engineering, construction and maintenance personnel. Write specifications, installation instructions and substation operating instructions (which direct field personnel on how to manipulate substation equipment). (15%)
- Provide design support to engineering personnel during capital project design phase by developing new design standards or revising existing standards. Modify design standards to address safety issues, construction problems, environmental circumstances and public concerns. (5%)

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO THE TABLE:

- PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WHO HAVE AN ASSOCIATES OR BACHELORS IN APPLIED SCIENCE OR MATH DEGREE. THIS IS NOT A POSITION REQUIRING AN ENGINEERING DEGREE.
- EXPERIENCE DEVELOPING DESIGN STANDARDS TO BE USED ON PROJECTS RANGING FROM ROUTINE EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS AND INSTALLATIONS TO THE COMPLETE DESIGN OF NEW TRANSMISSION FACILITIES.
- Experience analysing routine engineering scenarios and performing necessary design calculations to comply with applicable codes and sound engineering practices.
- Experience conducting detailed technical and financial studies and analysing alternatives to determine proper equipment and/or applications.
- Experience developing and maintaining design standards by soliciting feedback and input from engineering, construction and maintenance personnel.
- Experience providing design support to engineering personnel.
