ABOUT THE PARTNER ORGANIZATION

Rwanda Military Hospital (RMH) was established in 1968 as a military referral hospital, but since the end of the 1994 genocide it has been serving 80% civilian and 20% military patients. While RMH has been offering secondary and tertiary level health care services, its new strategic direction focusses on referral hospital and teaching activities.

RMH is keen to offer more speech therapy services. There are currently no professionally qualified speech therapists in Rwanda. One medical staff from the private hospital in Kigali (King Faisal Hospital) is due to return to Rwanda in mid -2012, having qualified in speech therapy in Uganda. Over the next five year RMH will be sponsoring three medical staff to train in speech therapy in Uganda. RMH would like support to design and begin to deliver speech therapy services in Rwanda.

THE VOLUNTEER'S ROLE

This request for a volunteer is to support the development of speech therapy services in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department, by carrying out the following duties:
Produce an overall action plan for the development of the speech therapy unit
Produce a professional development plan for colleagues
Identify, assess and plan effective treatment management for patients with speech problems
Conduct outreach services with those not able to attend the hospital
Train staff/teachers in special schools/centres on speech impairment awareness and basic therapy

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Degree in Speech Therapy
5 years' experience of working as speech therapist
Research skills and practical experience, including qualitative and quantitative research skills
Good training and teaching skills and experience of delivering training.
English speaker essential and fluency in French is an asset
