Introduction:
The project is developing a new inkjet printer. Part of this is the ink curing process, where inks are polymerised to a very robust layer with the help of UV light. Designing the curing process is about searching for the optimal fit of ink, UV illumination, and print medium. Parameter research is done both by experiments and by modelling.

Position's main tasks:
The main task is to characterise UV light sources. This is primarily about measuring the light irradiance and light profile of various "candidate" light sources, but also about additional issues like electrical efficiency.

Next task is to give indications how/where a light source or its surroundings can best be optimised to get an output that better fits our requirements. For example: Can a better light profile be obtained by means of tilting the lamp, or by means of using diaphragms, mirrors, etc.

The person should also participate in multidisciplinary (physics, chemistry) research on determining relationships between illumination geometry and quality of the radiation-cured layer: Till which depth of ink layer a good polymerisation has been obtained, what is the hardness of the top layer, what is the texture of the cured layer, etc. This multidisciplinary research is about root cause analysis, and designing and performing experiments to find determining parameters.

The person needs to be strong in experimental physics but also be able to set up simple models.

Required area of education:
Physics. Preferably also experience with optics.

Background in Physics, experimental, theory and modelling.
