The goal of the project is to identify genetic factors involved in the retinal aging processes and to understand the molecular mechanisms of aging.
The project is divided into two major parts using different approaches. One is to identify new genes involved in the aging process. We study mouse mutants showing earlier onset of aging in the retina. We also use two mouse inbred strains which show different susceptibility to changes associated with retinal aging and aim to identify QTLs and their responsible genes. Another approach is to study the function of genes identified. We use molecular biological analyses involving cell biology and identifying binding proteins.
