Network & Firewall Engineer

The Role

- Ongoing evaluation of business and technical requirements, seeking to develop the Network Architecture accordingly
- Play a supporting role in developing and advising other technical and business resources to develop commercial and migration plans, procedures and specifications
- Develop the technical design of network components including LAN, WAN, IP telephony, video and wireless.
- Assist with design and review of infrastructure solutions that are in line with company standards and meet operational principles
- Provide support to other team members, plan and schedule own work and ensure delivery within the constraints of time, budget and quality

Scope of Role:

- Provide technical direction in technical specialism, influencing strategy, creating and maintaining standards and best practice.
- Provide representation at technology wide forums
- Provide definition of deliverables with estimates to Projects
- Design, build, test and implementation of infrastructure solutions
- Define configuration standards
- Production, review and authorisation of technical and support documentation

Key Accountabilities

- Develop the technical design of network components including . DataCentre Network, Network Security, and Application Delivery Controllers
- Assist with design and review of infrastructure solutions that are in line with company standards and meet operational principles
- Provide support to other team members, plan and schedule own work and ensure delivery within the constraints of time, budget and quality
- Assist and play a lead role in the commissioning of IP network infrastructure and overlaid services
- Support Application Streams to migrate/deploy solutions

Deliverables:

- Technical Direction
- Maintain an expert level technical knowledge in the required technical areas and a broader specialist base as new technologies emerge
- Assist in the creation of designs and standards in your technical area and advise on best practice
- Assist and lead the deployment of Network Infrastructure and Application solutions
- Assist with development of strategy in your technical area

Project Delivery

- Gather information to understand scope of project, and produce clear definition of technical deliverables with accurate estimates.
- Suggest appropriate options and recommend a chosen solution, including associated tasks (test strategies, etc) which meet operational principles
- Build and maintain a thorough understanding of the end to end design
- Produce, review and authorise technical and support documentation to a standard that will achieve sign-off from all necessary parties

Relationship Management
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and other technical authorities responsible for creating and maintaining standards in specialism
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with project, programme and delivery managers
- Effectively participate in project and technical meetings, representing both Infrastructure Projects Technical Services and your technical specialism
- Effectively engage with external parties, partners and suppliers

Planning, Monitoring and Control - Assist in project planning by providing accurate estimates, continually reviewing forecasts and liaising with PMs to keep resource allocations up to date
- Produce regular highlight reports detailing progress/key issues on each project.
- Raise issues and risks in a timely manner to the project manager

Skills & Experience

- Experience working in financial services organisations
- Experience of design and delivery of secure solutions meeting PCI-DSS requirements
- Experience of designing Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) deployments
- Experience in design, build and implementation of corporate size local and wide area networks.
- Professional accreditation preferred in relevant technical disciplines - (eg, Cisco CCNP/CCIE or Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE)
- Proven ability to plan and execute workload in a dynamic environment

Technical Knowledge:

- Recognised knowledge of business critical systems
- Proven ability in the design and implementation of complex IP network solutions
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network faults
- (Essential) In-depth understanding of Layer-2 networks including 10GE, PVST, LACP, vPC
- (Essential) Understanding of Layer-3 networks including IP, OSPF, BGP, BFD
- (Essential) Experience with, Cisco Switches (Cisco Nexus), Firewalls (Juniper SRX),
- Load-Balancers (F5 LTM/GTM)
- (Desirable) Knowledge of other related products:, Fortinet Fortigate and Fortimanager, Cisco ASA, SourceFire IDS, F5 ASM, Citrix Branch Repeater
- Knowledge of other related protocols and solutions: DNS, AD, DHCP, QoS, SNMP
- Knowledge of cabling media, industry standards and associated interfaces
- Knowledge of Network Management Platforms
