Job Description

A good opportunity has arisen for a Fatigue and Damage Tolerance (F&DT) Stress Engineer to join a multinational organisation on a contract basis in Bournemouth and The Isle of Wight.

The role will require Analysis and validation of metallic, hybrid and composite structures for Fatigue and Damage Tolerance. Ensure safe operation of Airbus aircraft with respect to structural integretory and operational effectiveness.

The job involves the F&DT calculation and sizing of metal parts within a fuselage stress team in collaboration with relevant structure design engineers. It covers the spectrum from pre-design, development, and technical assessments.

Tasks
-Analytical sizing of metal & hybrid joints.
-Use of Airbus tools for the sizing of fuselage structural components.
-Monitoring and support of Sub-contractors and or Risk Sharing Partners working on A/C components.
-Checking & validation of F&DT structural analysis reports for metal parts.
-Perform static, fatigue and damage tolerance analysis of A/C structural parts.
-Understanding of damage tolerance sizing of metallic part and specificities related to CFRP material behaviour
-Understanding of spectrum creation and analysis
-Checking/validating preparation of Global FEM & refined FEM models for the usage by operational teams.
-Definition of test requests for single parts.
-Definition of test strain gage in view of test exploitation.
-Analysis of test results and of associated analysis adaptation improvement to validate the sizing of parts.
-Contribution to Weight optimization of fuselage structural parts for new and existing aircraft designs.
-Proactive contribution to trade-off studies and selection of architectural design principles
-Insure availability of Stress Sheets and Stress justification Reports for structural components with the right level of quality to allow approval
-Prepare or insure availability of presentations for steering committees.

Required skills

Engineer in mechanics / aeronautics

3-5 years' experience in Fatigue & Damage Tolerance (F&DT)

As per applied position, the technical ability expectation vary but involves several of the here after:

Understanding how are working aircraft structures and or other lightweight structure. Ability to determine the best balance between the different load bearing structures of an aircraft.
Understanding of the loading of the structural components generated by operations.
Knowledge of fracture mechanics. Knowledge of spectrum building and processing
Knowledge of internal Airbus methods and tools for the F&DT sizing of metal structures.
Knowledge of maintenance process and impact on Damage tolerance analysis.
Experience gained in Ability to perform static and fatigue and damage tolerance sizing of metal structure.
Experience gained in Ability to perform analytical stress calculations using industrial standard methods i.e.:HSB/ESDU.
Working knowledge of NASTRAN/PATRAN.
Knowledge of certification process of aircraft components and understanding of stress relevant Airworthiness regulations.
Good knowledge of working with and applying modern calculation programmes (linear and non-linear FEM programmes). Know the capabilities and also limitations of FEM applied to aircraft structures. Ability to model CFRP parts utilizing common FEM tools.
Ability to utilize modern CAD programs would be an advantage to obtain necessary information for the sizing of parts. Preference given to knowledge of CATIA V5.
Understanding how to adapt the usage of CFRP/metallic materials for the different applications and sizing criteria within an aircraft structure. Be able to balance the differing criteria, v/s weight, against static, fatigue and damage tolerance etc. Be able to size in F&DT a metal part in a hybrid structure containing CFRP and metallic parts.
Have an understanding of the limitations of the common manufacturing process for A/C parts and be able to select the appropriate for the relevant application.
