Distributed Java Development Lead

The Role

- Lead, manage and co-ordinate the resources and processes to deliver and maintain software solutions within the Distributed components of the new Global Payments Platform
- Ensure all programmes and projects associated with the Distributed elements of the new Global Payments Platform and associated interfaces with the remaining Core components are appropriately assessed, designed, planned, resourced, scheduled and delivered in a timely and cost effective manner. Responsible for systems analysis, development and unit testing phases of all projects assigned to this team ensuring quality, budgetary and plan milestone demands are met
- Build and maintain relationships with critical suppliers, both internal and external, maximising the value focus and timely delivery of projects to meet the demands of the business currently and in the future, ensuring that professional and industry standards are maintained and implemented consistently
- Takes full responsibility for the budgeting, estimating and planning of change to the Distributed components of the new Global Payments Platform in liaison with the associated change delivery teams, adhering to the PMM prescribed by the PMO team and associated governance model
- Identifies, recruits, manages, supports and coaches multi-disciplined technical delivery staff needed for the planning, development and delivery of projects to both deliver the Distributed components of the new Global Payments Platform and then maintain these going forward with a full schedule of releases and ad hoc changes annually

Key Accountabilities

- Delivery/within a budgetary framework and with full accountability/for all aspects of the provision of technical delivery on the distributed components of the new Global Payments Platform/in order to meet WorldPay business requirements and in conjunction with the Technology team objectives.
- Planning/implementation and adherence/to the process of budgeting, estimating, planning and objective setting for the activities of the team - establishing direct systems to monitor progress and take corrective actions as appropriate/in order to meet cost, time and quality expectations.
- Change management/initiate and manage innovation and change, demonstrating the leadership skills needed to delegate to and motivate members of the team/in order to contribute to and drive the constant improvement and evolution of the new Global Payments Platform delivery team.
- Business knowledge/maintain/a detailed knowledge and understanding of the teams' business drivers and have a comprehensive understanding of how this fits into the overall WorldPay business strategy/in order to ensure that the objectives of the team are aligned with those of the new Payments Platform Delivery team and Technology division in order to provide direction to the staff.

Skills & Experience

Critical Competencies (skills and abilities required for the role):

- Full life cycle IT development and payments industry knowledge in union with common modern OO based programming languages and associated Middleware, database and Linux based OS products
- Formal management training including people management, legal implications, incident management and security implications
- Experience of driving delivery of technology projects
- Takes ownership to build a strong productive team

Experience:

- Experience in IT development at a management level.
- Commercial experience in developing high performance/availability, Real Time transactional processing solutions with a wide variety of design and delivery exposure
- Proven track record of successful project implementations in a technical environment involving one or multiple payment systems dealing with large scale programmes and projects and associated structure
- Experience in leading a team of at least 20 technical staff through the whole project life cycle on repeated occasions and comfortable with a offshore/onsite delivery model
- Solid line management experience managing a technical team in a full line management capacity
- Genuine enthusiasm for excellence in design coupled with an appropriate level of delivery pragmatism
- Sound grasp of the payments system transaction life cycle, including the message flows, key decisions points, financial reconciliation and overall processing landscape
- Demonstrates an awareness, understanding and appreciation of commercial and contractual issues and how this influences ongoing delivery.

Technical Knowledge:

- Java/J2EE and associated concepts including OO and SOA design principles
- Oracle ExaData infrastructure and associated Fusion Middleware based on Oracle Linux UEK 5.8
- Relational databases, specifically Oracle 11g r2, IBM DB2
- Development life cycle experience using both Waterfall and Agile methodologies.
- Multi-threading in high volume, high availability systems.

People Management:

- Direct and motivate team members, including coaching, development, mentoring, staff recruitment and team building
- Direct line management responsibility for employees, as well as building and maintaining relationships with a wide range of internal stakeholders and partners
- Responsible for appropriate people management activities - eg performance management of direct reports, maintenance of team files, team communications etc

Financial Management:

- Responsibility for managing a variety of work packages within agreed project budgets which typically range between £10k to £1m.
