Database Specialist

Background

Our Central Government client is currently recruiting for a Database Specialist to join them on a contract basis, to start ASAP until the end of December 2013 based in Worthing, to support delivery of IT Modernisation activity. The first element of this activity is delivery of a FAP and Windows 7 desktop upgrade.

The new role of Database Specialist will provide the expertise to manage and maintain all Agency databases in, and transitioning to, the live IT environment. The role holder will also act as a technical expert to resolve database related incidents and problems under the ITIL problem management process.

The successful candidate will therefore have good technical knowledge (preferably MCDBA) and a track record of building good working relationships, providing sound advice and working collaboratively to solve IT problems.

The successful applicant will be based in Worthing but will occasionally be required to travel to other VOA offices as required.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The Database Specialist will be responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of databases. S/he will support the development and release of new or changed IT services by ensuring that proposed changes and releases conform to agreed Operational Acceptance Criteria, that rollout and back out plans are practicable, and by rigorously ensuring that the change control process is adhered to. S/he will assist the Performance and Monitoring Specialist in defining the database capacity, performance and availability monitoring metrics.

The Database Specialist will provide key input into the incident and problem management processes by providing technical escalation to other support teams and working directly with third party suppliers when required.

The successful candidate will:

* Ensure that all enterprise databases operate within agreed parameters

* Establish that all IT services meet agreed Operational Acceptance Test criteria

* Rigorously ensure that the change control process is adhered to

* Ensure that IT services roadmaps are maintained

* Ensure that product life cycle milestones are identified and escalated where required

* Identify Single Points of Failure (SPOF)

* Participate in the Service Improvement life cycle

* Liaise with third party suppliers on infrastructure services matters relating to VOA databases

* Create monthly service performance reports

* Proactively monitor the health of the VOA enterprise databases and identify and avert potential issues threatening that health

* Provide technical leadership and guidance where required

* Manage a Database Analyst.

Skills/Experience Required

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

* ITIL V3 Foundation Certificate
* ITIL V3 Capability Certification
* Microsoft Certified Database Administrator MCDBA
* Oracle database administration
Or demonstrable equivalent experience and prepared to acquire the above qualifications in the first 12 months.

* Working independently and being self motivated and organised

* Applying ITIL based processes to maintain and improve service levels

* Manageing customer expectations and improving service levels

* Line manageing effective daily performance and development
