Data Migration Engineer - Blackpool

Currently seeking an SC cleared Data Migration Engineer to be based on site in Blackpool, for a contract duration of 4 months, to be confirmed by the client.

Due to the nature of the role and the time scale and requirments issued by the client, candidates have been asked to hold current SC level security clearance for this role.

DATA MIGRATION PROJECT -  BACKGROUND

HP is delivering the DWP Transformation Programme by introducing the Workplace 360 desktop solution to 140,000 users in over 900 DWP sites. The transformation includes the migration of the majority of end-user computing environment from a Windows XP fat client to a Windows 7/208 R2 Thin Client solution (Workplace 360G).

Currently end-users data is stored on local site file Servers which are backed up to a central location. In the future state user data will be accessed from a centralised W360G cloud located alongside the users new virtual desktops.

DATA MIGRATION - PROCESS

The rollout schedule demands that Data Migration activities are carried out on several sites simultaneously in order to meet the timescales that the project demands (completion target 31st March 2013) 

The Data Migration activities are part of a general Lifecycle which is designed to transform the DWP Users IT facilities. The main Data Migration element of this will start at the close of business for an office and be ready for the next working day.  

DATA MIGRATION – RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS

The role of Data Migration Engineer will be to carry out the Data Migration operations to move this data in line with a set of established procedures and within a defined period to ensure that the new service is ready for the start of the next working day for the DWP Users. This will mean carrying out several activities on multiple DWP sites. In order to co-ordinate this the Data Migration activities are scheduled and controlled through a centralised set of tools providing specific instructions for the Data Migration Engineer to follow, report progress on and confirm completion.

The activities and toolsets that the Data Migration Engineer will be required to use are:

- PureDisk backup product.
- vSphere Administration.
- Changes to DNS Entries.
- Use of DHCP.
- Operation of scripts.
- Control of migration activities through the centralised Data Migration toolset.

Although some knowledge of the above would be useful experience is not required with the toolset as full training will be provided to successful candidates in a controlled environment prior to participating in the Data Migration activities.

Some of the Migration activities are expected to complete over several days. Data Migration Engineers will be working as part of a team of Data Migration Engineers and will be expected to provide detail handovers between the different shifts.

WORKING PATTERN

The Data migration activities will take place outside of DWP core working hours and therefore the Data Migration Engineers are required to operate in a shift working pattern consisting of evenings, weekends and some bank holidays
