Data centre technician

The IDC Technical Specialist's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, Installation/testing of patch cables, basic server Install/troubleshooting, booking in/accepting deliveries and access requests, conducting back-up tape changes, acting as the remote hands for customer requests. Installations of Servers and network equipment as directed, including raid, ILO/DRAC configuration. Respond to calls from internal groups for hardware or software assistance and problem resolution. Maintain and troubleshoot a wide range of client problems in addition to replacing server components and peripheral equipment. Implement systems and software upgrades and OS, configuration changes for users, based on reference system documentation provided, including Windows, Linux & Solaris. Process access & delivery requests. Responsible for coordinating significant elements of the installation phases as it pertains to the timely turn-up of customer's web hosting Servers .Works closely with the MoW IDC operations team to resolve high severity tickets. Manage work requests & interfaces among internal and external organizations to ensure that all parts of the job are completed. Manage site Inventory of cables, power strips etc. Greet/assist customers with remote hands tasks when they are at the data centre. Assist management with creating documentation and improving the data centre practices/processes

Requirements: Basic server configuration skills and installation experience. Shift work, call out and overnight work will be required. A customer focused & pro-active attitude .The individual will be working within a small team, hence excellent verbal and communications skills are required. Responsible for technical space on a day-to-day basis to meet data centre standards. The individual should be self-motivated, able to work under minimal supervision and flexible in their approach towards work & work hours.

Highly desirable Skills: Strong Knowledge of network cabling infrastructure including installation and testing of CAT6, fibre and co-ax cabling .Understanding and experience of cable management & best practices within a data centre rack environment. Switch configuration experience. Familiar with ticketing systems (preferably Remedy) Experience in dealing with end customers in a face-to-face manner and over the phone. Experience within a data centre is not required, but highly desirable
