Cost Associate (9 Month OT)

Role Objective:

The role will support the Cost Lead Accountant in delivering world class performance in cost accounting and reporting capabilities for Severn Trent and delivering "one version of the truth" for cost accounts. The role will also support the standardisation of processes across the cost accounting team.

Key Accountabilities:

Support the Cost Lead Accountant in delivering performance consistent with objectives. Produce the detailed figures for cost (Opex and Capex) and income that are used in the monthly and annual accounts of Severn Trent. Identify, investigate and report on variances against budgeted & forecasted Opex and Income numbers. Provide support to line managers and other stakeholders involved in the cost processes. Analyse critical balance sheet areas such as Accruals and GRIR. Produce accurately and timely analysis of costs for Tax & Other Statutory purposes Contribute to the on-going objective of standardising processes, challenging existing working practices and understanding migrations of work in and out of the team if necessary.

Experience:

Experience of dealing with a high volume of transactions, a number of which can be complex, and the incumbent must be able to appreciate the causes and effects of movements in these figures. Experience working on their own initiative to perform initial analysis before escalating, and then supporting the team leader in ensuring that the problem is resolved in a timely manner. Experience of working in an Accounts department. Experience of using SAP is desirable.

Capabilities:

The ability to handle data from various sources. The ability to influence the business to ensure that this data is received in a timely manner so that the Cost Accounting team can meet tight deadlines. The ability to present financial information to 'non-finance' staff in such a way to aid understanding and to ensure effective financial control and the correct accounting treatment of expenditure. The ability to proactively note where current policies and procedures have gaps or are inappropriate, and be able to propose solutions to the Cost Lead Accountant.

Qualifications:

The applicant should have started their studies towards becoming a part-qualified accountant, and an awareness of financial control, international financial reporting standards (IFRS) and regulatory accounting requirements would be advantageous.

Additional Information:
Salary: £20,000 - £22,000
