BOTANISTS/FIELD SURVEYOR

CEH BANGOR

Salary: £19,740 - £23,390
Contract Type: Fixed Term Appointment (April - September 2014)
Hours: Full Time
Closing Date: 29/11/13
Interview Date: 09 + 10 January 2014

CEH are looking for 9 experienced botanists and field surveyors to work on a major project monitoring the state of the natural and historic environment in Wales and accessing the impact on people and society. The post will be based within the Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (GMEP) team at CEH Bangor. However, the role demands a high level of flexibility regarding location as surveyors will be expected to travel throughout Wales for the duration of the contract. Initial appointments will be from April 2014 to September 2014. The project runs until 2016 so these seasonal contracts could be renewed on an annual basis.

Main duties for the role:

- To travel throughout Wales between April and September as directed by the fieldwork manager
- To map the broad and priority habitats and associated landscape features of predetermined one kilometer squares using bespoke GIS and surveying software
- To identify higher plant species and bryophytes in a variety of plots across a range of habitats throughout Wales
- To collect soil samples and other environmental data as required

Successful candidates will require excellent botanical identification skills and the ability to work across a range of habitats encountered in Wales. It is essential that you are able to recognize broad and priority habitats and have experience of a range of ecological census techniques. You must be a team player, physically fit and flexible in your approach to travel during the working week, as you will be expected to work at a variety of locations throughout Wales for the duration of the survey. You must be IT literate. Some experience of GIS software is also desirable.

The surveyors appointed will split into teams to cover the whole of Wales. We will be looking to identify team leaders with proven leadership and management experience to coordinate and manage teams on a day to day basis in addition to the duties described above. Applicants should say in their covering letter if they would like to be considered for this leadership role. Salary for team leader role will reflect the additional leadership skills and responsibility involved.
