Salary £24,226 to £30,537 per annum depending on experience (Bioinformatician)

Fixed term post until February 2017

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior Bioinformatician/Bioinformatician (depending on experience) with good programming knowledge to work in the Garnett Group - Translational Cancer Genomics.

We have the world's largest public database of cancer drug sensitivity data as well as a wealth of genetic information from human tumours and cancer cell lines. A unique opportunity has arisen for you to take an important role in developing the informatics resources to support our research. This involves developing and maintaining our laboratory tracking and data processing systems, as well as ensuring the safe and secure storage of large-scale datasets. You will collaborate with laboratory biologists to establish and support their IT requirements. Our systems are designed to facilitate data sharing within the institute, with our international collaborators, and with the wider scientific community via our website

This post would suite a candidate with a strong aptitude for programming, e.g. using Perl, Python or Java, or perhaps the R statistical programming language. Experience of working with databases (e.g. Oracle or MySQL) will be an advantage. If necessary in-post training and support will be provided for the candidate.

You will be working with the latest technology in a freethinking and dynamic environment. We are looking for an individual who has good communication skills and enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team environment. The position is based at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and is available immediately.

- Able to present internally
- Ability to organise own workload

Ideal Skills

- Experience in Web programming, e.g., Javascript/AJAX/JQuery
- Experience in software development
- BSc in scientific discipline
- MSc in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related field
- Experience of molecular biology/cancer biology/pharmacogenomics

Other information

The Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer project () aims to identify molecular features of human cancers that predict response to anti-cancer therapies. To achieve our goal, we are screening a wide range of anti-cancer therapeutics against a large number of genetically characterized human cancer cell lines and correlating drug sensitivity with extensive genetic data. This information can be used to improve the efficacy of cancer treatment by finding those patients most likely to benefit from a specific therapy.

The project is part of a comprehensive Wellcome Trust funded collaboration between The Cancer Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Center for Molecular Therapeutics, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, USA.

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

Please include a covering letter and CV with your application.

Closing date for applications: 29th November 2015, however applications will be considered and reviewed on an on-going basis and therefore the post may be filled before the deadline.
