Big Data Engineer

OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS AREA OR PROJECT:

The candidate will be part of the SAMI Future State and Innovation arm. The candidate will be engaged with the team responsible for delivering the firms Strategic Big Data capability. Specifically they will be involved in engineering and supporting a product in the Big Data space for a internal clients. The tools are centered on the provision of Big Data and Machine Learning capabilities for clients and success in delivering these are crucial elements of a wider program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Own, operate and support a range of data repository capabilities. We are looking for a talented and experienced individual to support, engineer, document and commoditize extensions to these data repositories. The role requires a highly skilled engineer to provide excellence on user support on existing functionality. The role will also require delivering against engineering deliverables.

CHALLENGES CONTRACTOR WILL BE FACING IN THIS ROLE:

- This will be a client facing role
- The candidate will need to pivot between support roles and engineering roles they will hold
- Integration of tools into the ecosystem
- Communication and alignment with firm standards adopted by multiple teams inside the company

ESSENTIALS SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

- A place on a team that's on the edge of technological capability
- Tools for semantic reasoning and ontological data normalization (RDF, SPARQL, Tamr)
- A hands-on support role with live client engagements
- Opportunity for client engineering engagements
- Large-scale distributed data analytic platforms and compute environments (Spark, Map/Reduce)
- Room to improve our capabilities in monitoring and technical incident management
- Support (L1-L3) of users through technical issues
- Enterprise-grade Linux Servers requiring configuration around deployment, installation and deployment
- A position with the ability to shape and drive architectural decisions to achieve high value results

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must have solid Big Data experience
- Experience with infrastructure including hardware configuration, cooling and performance optimization
- Experience with data management and engineering including ingestion, transformation, standardization and performance management on a large scale
- Experience with Distributed Compute frameworks such as Hadoop
- Strong knowledge of security technologies such as Kerberos and SSL
- Experience with automated deployment technologies such as Ansible or Puppet
- Experience in an architectural role with good understanding of a range of systems
- Experienced with having technical conversations with clients as well as senior and external partners
- Strong business analysis skills with the ability to rapidly understand technical requirements from a non-technical specification
- Experience in managing projects
- Ability to operate on multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience in a large corporate environment
- Experience in working in a highly confidential environment
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or similar
- Needs to be proactive and drive engagement
- Experience with toolsets such as JIRA, SVN and Ansible
- Strong team player
