12 Month Fixed Term Contract with the Potential for Extension

Full Time - 37 Hours per Week

Annual Salary - Circa £65,000. More may be available for an exceptional candidate.

The Essex Coronial Area was created under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and covers the former jurisdictions of Essex and Thurrock and Southend and South East Essex.

This will be a whole-time area coroner appointment to assist the existing Senior Coroner in discharging her responsibilities in the new area. It is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Coroner to gain experience in a very busy and demanding district which includes a prison, major ports of entry and varied topography. The appointee will carry out every duty and responsibility of the Coroner in the Senior Coroner's absence and will require the confidence and gravitas necessary to carry out this important public function. We are looking for exceptional candidates with excellent proven judicial, administration, leadership, efficiency and budgetary control ability

Applicants must be under the age of 70 and satisfy the judicial appointment eligibility condition on a 5-year basis. Applicants must be legally qualified and have experience of judicial or tribunal work. In any event training and support will be provided. The appointment will be subject to the consent of the Chief Coroner and the Secretary of State for Justice and in accordance with the Chief Coroners Guidance and Appointments No.6.

The salaries, expenses and disbursements of running the service are paid by Essex County Council as the relevant authority, through its payments facilities, and following its procedures and policies. The Council provides clerical support, office and court accommodation for the running of the service.
