Application DBA

Application DBA is primarily responsible for designing, implementing and supporting high volume database solutions.

As a member of the team, the successful candidate will apply Data Warehouse and Master Data Management methodologies and processes with a focus on performance in a high volume Business Intelligence environment. This position is a key role in the design, delivery and support of database initiatives and will provide leadership, technical advice and support. Works in team environment and provides database technical guidance throughout the entire life cycle.

Specific Responsibilities by category:
Development:
- Partner with business and IT teams to understand requirements
- Apply Data Warehouse and Master Data Management methodologies in software delivery
- Logical data modelling (normalized and dimensional) ensuring referential integrity
- Physical data modelling and implementation
- Design, create, and tune SQL/application database objects (tables, views, indexes, etc)
- Develop database packages, procedures, functions and triggers
- Change Management for Data Definition Language (DDL) and Data Manipulation Language (DML)
- Create deployment scripts that contain DDL necessary to migrate versions through environments
- Assist developers with data access methods and optimal usage of database resources

Performance:
- Perform database Application performance monitoring, tuning and optimization
- Monitoring and runtime optimization of applications data jobs, replication and ETL activities
- Planning for future capacity and performance needs (organic and strategic growth)

Standards:
- Establish and maintain database Application documentation and standards. Also review with stakeholders
- Comply with all Security, Architecture and Infrastructure standards. Recommend improvements as needed.

Support:
- Run deployment scripts in development database environments (separation of duties)
- Provide 24x7 support when required. Update support documentation to minimize "key man risk"
- Perform general technical troubleshooting and give consultation to development teams
- Interface with database vendor for technical support and Service Request management

Innovate:
- Provide leadership, technical advice and support to continuously improve the database strategy
- Partners with dev teams to formulate approach and appropriate uses of utilities and DMBS Tools
- Maintain leading edge knowledge of industry and technology trends, to effectively assess and recommend

Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience/education
- Minimum of 7 years in Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence design in a high volume environment.
- Extensive knowledge of Oracle 10G/11G databases and PL/SQL required.
- Experience with migration and deployment of code required.
- Experience with both OLTP and dimensional database design required.
- Demonstrated experience with Entity Relationship (ER), Dimensional, and object modelling techniques (eg Erwin)
- Demonstrated experience tuning databases in a multi-terabyte (5+) Oracle environment
- Demonstrated effectiveness during development, deployment and support phases including ETL support functions.
- Superior analytical and problem resolution skills.
- Must be able to work effectively alone or in a team environment and ability to multi-task.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of data warehousing architectural approaches
- Knowledge of Data Warehouse practices, database and ETL design and analysis.
- Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
- Proactive personality with a proven track record of delivering on responsibilities and tasks.
- Experience in an Informatica environment desired
- Excellent ability to translate business needs and problems into systems' design and technical solutions.

Preferred: - Master's degree and/or LOMA certification
- Oracle DBA Certifications
- MDM experience
- Insurance and/or reinsurance industry knowledge
