Job Description

We are seeking to recruit an experienced Web Application Developer. You will join the Chemogenomics team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

You will develop a series of web-based applications and interfaces for the ChEMBL chemogenomic resources. In collaboration with senior team members you will also have a role in determining and advising on the web development strategy for the chemogenomic resources. In addition you will be involved with the development, maintenance and documentation of these tools and supporting their usage within EMBL-EBI and externally. The position will also involve some requirement gathering and use-case development.

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry.

Qualifications and Experience

Required:
•A BSc (or equivalent) in a technical subject (e.g. life science, computing or mathematics)
•5 + years postgraduate experience in web development with a demonstrable track record in the area
•Experience of developing web-based applications in an industrial or academic environment
•History of good practice in software engineering, rapid development cycle, user-friendly web interfaces and good code documentation and version control
•Experience and knowledge of a broad range of technologies and programming environments is essential
•Experience of scripting languages, particularly Python and JavaScript and experience of working with MVC frameworks such as Django
•Sound knowledge of relational databases (primarily Oracle), SQL PL/SQL, web-services and Internet protocols

Desirable:
•Formal training in web application design and development, as well as modelling and Human-Computer interaction
•Exposure to application development within a scientific computing environment/life science environment is advantageous
•Experience of contributing to open software projects and documenting them, on GitHub for example
•Prior experience of project management
