Background

Our Central Government client is looknig to take on a User Experience Design Senior Specialist to work a 4 month contract based in Leeds.

The UX consultant will work for the User Experience function within the Technical Architecture and Infrastructure Directorate (TAID). The proposed UX consultant will work for the Summary Care Record (SCR) programme but will also contribute to the Personal Demographics Service (PDS)

The Personal Demographics Service and Summary Care Record (PDS and SCR) are critical component for the ongoing delivery of the Information Systems and secure clinical information sharing across the NHS as required to support the NHS and Public Health. The browser based version of the Summary Care Record enables users to view the demographic information and/or a summary of the patients GP record information. The browser based version of SCR is used in many contexts within the NHS system, its usage is increasing and there are approximately 275,000 browser requests per week.

The User Experience (UX) team within the TAID offers UX consulting services.

Within the context of the interoperability framework "Developing the User Experience", UX has been identified as one of five key objectives, the UX team can support this through:
-UX Assurance for internal and external suppliers
-UX evaluation of software products
-Design services around User Interfaces
-Consultancy and best practice guidance on user centric design (UCD) approaches

Main Duties/Responsibilities

This role is mainly as a visual designer. The main duties that the required individual will be expected to provide will be to provide the user experience function for various development teams and work within the UX leadership provided by the head of UX.

*They will be expected to define and design the visual and interaction design of SCR. The main aspects of their work will be on the visual design layer. However they will also work on aspects of the interaction design of SCR, screens that were not part of the original SCR application.
*They will follow a user-centred design process
*They will report to the head of UX as well as the senior stakeholders in the development of SCR
*The will work with the SCR development team and manage and track the process of incorporating user experience improvements into SCR
*They will work on developing UI assets for SCR and the
*The will work closely with the head of UX and other User Experience Design Specialists

Outputs/Deliverables to be achieved

*Application specific UX Audits (Reports)
oThe candidate will analyse the visual and interaction design of several applications
oFrom this report a prioritised list of UI recommendations will be developed
oThey will develop designs to interaction problems (Report, CSS, HTML and/or Prototype)
oThey will develop solution with the development team, programme team and other stakeholders
oDevelop solution with the development team and stakeholders of the SCR team
*Communication reports to programme and development teams
*Resolve any implementation issues with development teams
*Manage the UI asset production
*Creation of UI style Guide and assets (Report, CSS, png or jpg, Prototype or HTML)
*Assessment of the visual design of other internal applications
*Creation of intteraction design
*Creation of a visual design
*Application of UI assets to DCR and SCR
*Work with other HSCIC teams to develop Style guide

Skills/Experience Required

Essential:
*Has worked as an visual designer or interaction designer with development teams
*The ability to evaluate visual and interaction designs
*Creation of visual treatments and communication of visual designs
*Creation of new user interfaces (eg screen flows, Interaction design and visual design)
*Creation of low fidelity wireframes (mock-ups) and/or HTML prototypes
*Knowledge of CSS, HTML4.0, 5.0
*Creating visual style guide
*Extensive experience of graphic applications (eg.Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks)
*Desktop experience

A portfolio of work would be advantageous

Desirable:
*Stakeholder management
*Understanding of the user-centred development life cycle
*Application of responsive design principles
*Experience of working within the healthcare sector
*Experience of working within large companies or UK government departments
*Familiar with agile development process
*Familiar with CSS frameworks

Formal Qualifications Required

A bachelor's/Master's degree, or equivalent, in:
oIndustrial design or product design
oInteraction Design
oErgonomics
oor substantial proven experience in the field as an interaction/visual designer.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Basic Security Check, which is at a cost of £25.
