Systems Engineer - ATM

Main purpose of role

To deliver systems engineering to a key client in the ATM market.

Specific Responsibilities

The role will cover all aspects of the systems life cycle, and could include any or all of the following:

- Identification and analysis of system requirements.
- Generation of system architecture and design or evaluation thereof.
- Conduct of systems feasibility studies.
- Determination or evaluation of integration strategy for large-scale systems.
- Assessment of existing enterprise architectures, or identification of new architectures, to meet business level requirements.
- Dealing with client stakeholders at all levels, including via facilitating stakeholder workshops.

Experience

Experience within the AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT DOMAIN is highly desirable, though good candidates with experience of other domains - such as civil and military aerospace - will also be considered.

Those candidates without ATM experience must have significant experience of working successfully with a minimum of support and must show evidence of having successfully transitioned to working in a new domain in the past.

Skills

A sound appreciation of the underlying principles of systems engineering in a complex systems environment, including one or more of systems of systems, requirements engineering and systems architecture and design.

Understanding of the broad range of systems engineering.

An understanding of the issues associated with delivery of complex systems into a safety-related operation.

An ability to think analytically, rigorously and creatively.

Staff are likely to be highly customer-focussed and have effective oral and written communications skills to a range of technical and commercial audiences. In addition, they are likely to have well developed influencing skills.

An ability to carry out detailed justified work to commercial and technical requirements, and to be able to constructively criticise and assess others' work.

Knowledge of industry-standard tools and techniques, and a critical appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses; for example process engineering notations, modelling tools such as UML, IDEF, SSF, MODAF, DODAF, etc.

The ability to facilitate stakeholder workshops and to deal with stakeholders at all levels and from all areas of the client business.

The ability to plan and deliver your own work in a complex environment.

Education and Training

A first class or upper second degree in a relevant engineering discipline - or significant industrial experience. Relevant engineering disciplines could include systems engineering, maths, physics, software engineering - the first degree is likely to be numerate and scientific.

Training and development is likely to reflect a multi-disciplinary background and for principal roles experience at a variety of different levels within a business.

A further degree (eg MSc, or PhD) would not be an unusual qualification for a candidate.

Consistent in-service training demonstrating a professional approach to maintenance of skills

At the very least a clearly defined route through to chartered status and for principal staff membership of a relevant professional institution with chartered status.
