Job Title: Systems Engineer
Duration: 3 months+
Rate: £40 - 50.00 per hour subject to experience

Overview:
The major programmes team requires additional resource to support the development of technical specifications and on-going requirements management.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major programme where the successful candidate will be involved in working as part of a team, but also expected to be able to work with some autonomy.

Purpose of the role:
To meet the demand from current Programme, supporting the System Design Authority to ensure project technical specifications and requirements are available to meet programme schedules.

Responsibilities:
A System Engineer will be responsible for managing and conducting System Engineering activities throughout the initiation stage of a project, often acting as a project System Design Authority (SDA).

The Senior System Engineer will be responsible for:
*Being the technical point of contact for assigned work package
*Writing the project System Requirements Specifications
*Identifying user need and requirements through the development of CONEMPS, CONUSE, CONOPS and User Requirement Documents
*Developed and documented the System Design through System Design Specifications and Interface Specifications
*Ensuring compliance of the design to the technical requirements and project constraints (eg cost)
*Defining the systems sub-systems and their requirements including hardware and software
*Developing and continually refining the system acceptance strategy, and verification method for each system requirement. This may include writing the Acceptance Management Plan and Test Specifications.
*Ensure the specification, design and acceptance are fully traceable
*Provide guidance to and tasking members of, other engineering specialities (software, mechanical, electrical, ILS etc.)
*Being the main presenter at all internal and external design reviews
*Hold regular project, schedule and risk reviews with the project manager
*Provide a project input to project progress reports and meeting, Engineering estimate to complete and input to risk identification and mitigation.

Knowledge and experience required:
*Knowledge of Systems Engineering best practices and common pitfalls.
*Broad knowledge of Systems Engineering methodologies, processes and tools
*Working knowledge/appreciation of software electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering.
*Knowledge of fundamental commercial and financial issues.
*Knowledge of fundamental project management practices (eg Planning estimating, risk management et al).
*Significant experience in electronic system design/development in the defence industry or other relevant environment.
*Familiarity with the whole system/product life cycle.
*Experience of capture and analysis of functional and non-functional requirements.
*Experienced in synthesising high-level requirements through to design requirements.
*Experience of assessing designs against requirements.
*Experience of system design development and planning
*Experienced in developing verification/validation/acceptance plans and procedures.
*Experienced in conducting trade-off analyses and risk mitigation.
*Experience of the DOORS requirements management tool.

Desirable:
*Knowledge and awareness of future developments and trends in Systems Engineering theory.
*Knowledge of electronic systems used in the defence industry (eg Radar, communication, weapon, fire control, decoy, surveillance).
*Knowledge of network design
*Knowledge of legislative arena from an engineering perspective
*Awareness of safety issues.
*Knowledge of building and site security systems.
*Knowledge of the operational and organisation structure of the UK or similar armed forces.

Additional Information:
May be required to lead a team of Systems Engineers to execute a package of work agreed with the Project Manager, to the required quality and within the time and budget constraints.

There may be requirements for travel within the UK for liaison with other businesses, the Customer or End User, or to undertake commissioning or acceptance activities possibly for a week or more at a time.
