Systems Architect (CDN)

The Systems Architect is responsible for overseeing and managing the usage, configuration, and architectures of the various content distribution networks leveraged for global application distribution. Working with product and engineering teams, this role leads designing and building highly scalable distribution strategies, maximizing performance and cost, for multiple global top 5 web, mobile and API properties. Core needs include common caching and invalidation strategies, deployment and fallback architectures, providing automation tool kits, and optimizing the distribution costs and partnerships.

The ideal candidate has a rich experience managing Akamai and other large CDN providers, with a strong focus on API and WWW distribution on a global scale. A successful candidate will have deep understanding of HTTP and HTTPS transports, the DOM model and its quarks with load times, content encodings, and optimization strategies. As the industry grows into OTT online video distribution, knowledge and experience in streaming video, and strategies for efficient and scalable distribution will be a plus.

Responsibilities

- Conducting evaluation of current CDN setup and then refactoring architecture based off findings
- Define best practices and work with internal teams to execute necessary changes
- Provide best practices around releases, how to optimize our deployment time and cache warming
- Provide standard implementations/templates and automation to creating/removing properties
- Execute knowledge transfer and education initiatives (documentation, learning, self-education)
- Develop and maintain a feature roadmap and 3yr plan, including enhancements to current solutions, as well as where the company should be moving

Qualifications

- Deep understanding of CDN capabilities, strategies, and common architectures
- Significant experience managing and using Akamai's as a CDN solution
- Experience managing development and/or distribution of web and API applications, ideally on a global scale
- Experience with and/or knowledge of Fastly, Level 3, Edgecast, Limelight or like in-house solutions
- Experience with Web, Mobile & Over The Top (OTT) video streaming
- Ability to create and maintain a strong working relationship with Product Managers, Architects, System
- Administrators and Developers
- Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to distill a problem down to one or two key hypotheses and validate based on live and experimental data
- Excellent communications skills
- Ability to work closely with customers in defining content requirements
- Must be able to manage several active projects simultaneously, with minimal supervision
- Must be proactive in solving work area problems
- Establish standards that drive prompt and effective customer attention
- Actively participate in quality-driven programs
- Maintain high standards for product and performance
