JOB DESCRIPTION:

PLEASE NOTE: This is a full-time, two year term replacement position, with possibility of extension. Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to 4:00 p.m. (MDT) on Friday, May 30, 2014. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

UCP Unidata Program Center

Systemssoftware includes operating systems, data communications, compilers, debugging aids, hardware diagnostic tools, device drivers and editors. Ensure consistent and reliable operation of computing environment. Prepares and conducts system and programming tests requiring interfacing of hardware and software. Proposes, recommends/approves, and implements systems enhancements that will improve the reliability and performance of the computing environment. Monitors and enhances system usage and performance. Troubleshoots and repairs systems and network problems. Writes programs and/or scripts to increase system functionality and automate tasks including creation of a scalable cloud platform. Trains staff on system and computer usage. Monitors, maintains and controls system integrity, computer security, user access and passwords. Assist in the transition to a new cloud-based IT environment including the configuring, deployment and management of a cloud platform and infrastructure, ensuring a smooth migration path from the current on-site computing environment to a hybrid environment, which would eventually encompass on-premise, a virtual private cloud, and potentially some component of a community data-services cloud.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

GENERAL SYSTEM AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION:

- Researches, recommends, purchases, installs, and configures hardware including Servers (both on-premise and cloud), desktops, laptops, storage, back-up, printers and network equipment
- Responsible for domain administration.
- Monitors and manages system resources, including CPU usage, disk usage, and response times to maintain operating efficiency, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, resources, key processes and services.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
- Maintains network services including web, FTP, authentication, VNC, RDC, Sendmail/postfix.
- Adds system users, and conducts and verifies backups.

SECURITY:

- Administers Firewall and packet filter configuration, software maintenance, and operating system patching.
- Responsible for installing secure operating systems.
- Performs regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.

COMMUNITY AND USER SUPPORT:

- Configures, operates, and monitors streaming media services for Unidata seminar series.
- Specifies, installs, and configures equipment for annual Users Training Workshop, tri-annual Users Summer Workshop, and conference exhibits.
- Consults with users regarding problems and concerns; researches and implements effective solutions.
- Solves fairly complex issues independently.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- Bachelor's degree; and a minimum of four years' relevant experience; or
- Master's degree in computer science or computer-related field; and a minimum of two years' relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Demonstrated skill with Windows Server and domain administration.
- Demonstrated skill with at least one Unix/Linux operating system.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills interacting with users.
- Demonstrated skill in operating a secure computing and network environment.
- Demonstrated skill in integrating Windows and Unix/Linux user environments.
- Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting, problem determination and resolution.
- Demonstrated skill in configuring, installing, and supporting equipment for training classrooms, workshops, and conference exhibit.
- Demonstrated skill supporting multimedia conferencing and streaming media services.
- Demonstrated skill with network services including web, mail, and DNS.
- Demonstrated skill in heterogeneous backup and restore operations.
- Demonstrated skill in all aspects of procuring equipment from research/recommendation through configuration and installation.
- Experience with programming and Scripting.
- Experience with performance investigation, monitoring, and tuning.
- Knowledge of current computing and visualization hardware.
- Knowledge of Cloud Computing principles, functionality and concepts, and familiarity with cloud services such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and/or Rackspace.
- Willingness to intermittently work outside of normal business hours to ensure continuity of operations.
