STORAGE AREA NETWORK (SAN) ENGINEER

EDUCATION/EQUIVALENCY:

- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, IS, or job related degree or 4 years of combined education and work experience or total of 12 years of related work experience

CANDIDATE TECHNICAL BACKGROUND:

- Storage Area Network (SAN) or related experience. (Required, 8 years)
- Hands-on skills and experience with EMC, Hitachi, and/or IBM storage arrays and respective storage management systems. (Required)
- Hands-on skills and experience with Cisco fabric Switches. (Required)
- Experience in enterprise-class data centers is preferred. (Highly Desired)

DAILY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Operational responsibilities for storage area network (SAN) storage arrays and switch fabric
- Provide technical leadership to team members
- Assist with capacity management
- Review performance metrics and make recommendations for improvement
- Perform maintenance activities

SYSTEMS: Storage arrays and storage management systems from EMC, Hitachi, and IBM. SAN fabric Switches from Cisco with some Brocade.

PRIMARY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Some customer interaction required (high-profile contracts/customers); some senior management (VP level) interaction required.

WORKING HOURS/CONDITIONS: Regular M-F work week; typical 45 hour weeks; occasional weekend work; rotating on-call responsibilities.

TEAM SIZE: SAN team is currently 3 team members, plus team lead and manager; Dept. also has additional staffing for Backup/Recovery systems, NAS, AD, and other related technologies. Total dept size is 12.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

- 25% Responsible for storage area network (SAN) planning, architecture design and engineering. Determines feasibility from technical and economic perspectives. Evaluates equipment specifications and process requirements to conceive a practical design Compiles and analyzes operational data and directs tests to establish standard for new designs or modifications to existing equipment, systems, or processes.
- 25% Plans and evaluates complex SAN systems and makes recommendations for resources required to develop, maintain and/or expand service levels. Provides consultative support to facilitate design and to resolve design problems. May also monitor SAN performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made, and to determine where changes will need to be made in the future.
- 20% Plans, coordinates, and implements network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware. Anticipates and mitigates potential attacks through network or other connections to ensure the security of the system. Provides strategic planning and participation for disaster recovery operations.
- 10% Updates knowledge and skills to keep up with rapid advancements in technology. Researches, evaluates and recommends software and hardware products. Provides counsel and leadership on future use of technology and system improvements.
- 10% Ensures SAN compliance with audit requirements. Addresses new SAN vulnerabilities within audit-mandated time frames. Maintains effective security/backup and disaster recovery processes and systems.
- 5% Directs or leads technical support personnel as needed. May lead the gathering of business needs as well as the design of solutions through direct interaction with business unit leaders.
- 5% Maintains effective relationships with external suppliers to ensure appropriate levels of support. Plans large scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies. May interface with vendors to identify and purchase hardware and software. Operational and/or design leadership in enterprise SAN environment.
