SQL Server DBA

I'm looking to recruit an SQL DBA to join a Database Support team on an exciting contract.

The Database Support Team are responsible for creating and maintaining the Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases which underpin most of SSE's and SGN's core applications. They also administer the Oracle Application Servers and Oracle Weblogic Servers which host the front-end client components such as Oracle Forms, Reports and other 3rd-party java applications. The primary function is to ensure that all production databases are available, secure and performing satisfactorily, in compliance with defined Service Level Agreements. Some of the core tasks they carry out to achieve this are: Fixing user-generated and automated faults and alerts raised in INFOMAN. Building new databases according to strict build and security standards. Backup and Recovery of databases. Capacity planning for future data growth. Performance Tuning and Monitoring. Providing technical support to application development teams. Implementing change-controlled data and schema updates on production databases. Patching and upgrading all database / OAS / Weblogic servers to apply the latest security fixes and ensure that we are running at supported software versions.

You will work very closely with the BI / MIS reporting team using your SQL Server database tuning experience to recommend, plan and implement improvements to the existing MIS system and developing BI solution.

This will consider but not be limited to the following:

Parallelism, memory allocation, partitioning, index design, database design, QA, performance SQL techniques and knowledge transfer. You will need to be a good communicator and able to make and meet self-imposed deadlines with the customer. You should also be a team player and are able to become assimilated into the team.

Technical Skills required: SQL Server : SQL; T-SQL; Management Studio; SQLCMD / OSQL / ISQL; Backup / Recovery; Resource Governor; Database Mirroring; Partitioning; Replication; SSIS; SSAS; SSRS; SQL Agent; SQL Profiler; Encryption; BCP; SQL Express • Backup and recovery, including recreating the Master database. • Database and SQL performance tuning - including using the SQL Profiler. • Create and maintain SQL Agent jobs. • SQL Server 2005/8 installation and administration. • SQL Server in a Windows cluster. • Create and maintain DTS packages. • Database space and object management. • Database storage and capacity management. • Advise application developers on logical and physical database design. • Advise application developers on SQL standards and performance. • Investigate RDBMS new features and provide recommendations.
