We are looking for a Software Engineer to work within a team of 4 people to further develop the MetaboLights database at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

Part of the Chemoinformatics and Metabolism Team and reporting to the Database Development Coordinator, your responsibilities will be the design, implementation, documentation, debugging, testing, and support of various software components.

The team interacts closely with other teams at the EBI and incorporates existing technology developed in our Institute, as well as elsewhere.

EMBL-EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

Qualifications and Experience of the Software Engineer (SQL, Java, Oracle):

You should have a degree in a relevant field or proven professional experience. You will also have good knowledge of standard software development and the ability to use, modify and adapt other developer's code if necessary. Fluency in Java and at least one of the common SQL databases, preferably Oracle or MySQL, is essential. Experience with technologies such as Hibernate, Spring, JavaScript/jQuery and R is desirable.

You will be able to work independently with internal and external collaborators and be able to familiarise yourself with novel technology. You will have good communication skills and a friendly, open personality.
