Signalling Principles Design Engineer/IRSE Principle Designer

We are looking for a Signalling Principles Design Engineer to work on a light-rail based project in Manchester for a leading aerospace and defence company.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

To manage and independently check the delivery of packages of signalling design, in line with the scope of works, the phasing of works on site. Producing book wiring, bills of materials, design risk assessments. All work is in required to achieve company objectives in terms of programme schedule, financial and quality targets.

To ensure that the Engineering Processes are applied correctly and appropriately on the project to company, legislative, regulatory and international standards.

This role includes significant application of signalling design principles from either the post holder or members of the team.

As part of the Engineering process you will interact with the following key roles:

- Signalling Design Manager
- Lead Signalling Principles Design Engineer
- Client Project Engineering leads
- Project Design Authority and discipline Responsible Engineers
- Engineering staff at all levels
- Sales and Marketing Lead, Bid Managers, Capture lead and Bid team members
- Project team members including: Installation, Testing, Commercial, Purchasing, Planning Project Management Office, Heath, Safety, Quality, Environment
- Other Functional and Operational managers at all levels

EXPECTED COMPETENCE LEVEL:

SKILLS (UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE)

- Multidisciplinary engineering expertise, with specific knowledge of the domain, infrastructure, Systems Integration practices and the disciplines utilised on the project.
- Ability to develop innovative and low risk practical engineering strategies to manage a complex project through its life cycle.
- Strong knowledge and proven application of Engineering Project Delivery and processes across the full project life cycle.
- Sustain good working relationships with staff, peers and managers, customers and stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills supporting logical, effective and timely decision making.
- Strong appreciation of Safety and Safety Assurance within the Engineering discipline and Domain and working knowledge of CDM regulations.
- Familiarity with project management and delivery processes and practices, commercial acumen and a robust approach to budget and schedule control.
- Effective personal organisation and an ability to remain composed focused with attention to detail under pressure.

EXPERIENCE:

- Independent checking of signalling designs in accordance with standards and internal procedures.
- The ideal candidate should possess the following skills, experience and knowledge:
- Minimum of 5 years proven signalling engineering experience, including senior responsibility;
- Appropriate technical qualification or equivalent;
- IRSE Principles Designer Licence 1.1.150D or 1.1.130; 1.1.550
- Ideally IRSE Signalling Design Verifier Licence 1.1.160;
- Registration with the IRSE, ideally to Member level;
- Extensive knowledge of signalling principles;
- Has a full understanding of the Engineering life cycle and its processes.
- Current knowledge of signalling design processes;
- Extensive knowledge of LU and or Network Rail standards;
- Able to lead the production of signalling design drawings as instructed and in accordance with own knowledge and experience, and to act as an independent verifier of the work of others;
- Able to provide resource estimates to the Design Manager.
- Able to act as a Mentor to members if the signalling design staff as directed.
- Able to communicate effectively and establish good relationships with other team members and with other disciplines and peers.
- Professional qualification to Chartered Engineer level.
- Knowledge of contractual conditions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATION:

- Engineering Degree or equivalent
- Chartered Engineer/Member of Professional Institution
- Passed IRSE Exams

ESSENTIAL

- IRSE Principles Designer Licence 1.1.150D, 1.1.550, ideally 1.1.160
- HND/Engineering Degree or equivalent
- Have attained, or working towards an appropriate professional status or equivalent
