Senior/Software Developer - New Pipeline Development (NPD)

Fixed-term for 3 years

An exciting opportunity has become available for a software developer/senior software developer to work on a web application, which supports decision making for sequencing process quality control. Increase in the volume of data and the number of facets describing quality necessitates a redesign of the existing system. As part of your role, you will be responsible for developing extensive, adaptable and robust design solutions and to ensure the smooth running of production systems. You will be required to deal with shifts and changes in customer requirements as the project progresses. With time there will be opportunities to work on other parts of our systems, such as analysis pipelines (run on computer cluster), application for tracking sequencing instruments, data archival and warehousing.

The NPG group, where the positions are available, is a part of core sequencing informatics team at WTSI. The group develops and maintains software for analysis and archival of sequencing and genotyping data produced by the high throughput facilities at the institute. Members of the team work in close collaboration with each other. Opportunities for professional growth are encouraged through formal and informal training, exposure to all elements of the software development cycle and work on diverse software projects. Essential Skills

-A strong undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Computer Science (or similar), Bioinformatics or other science discipline.
-Highly competent in one (developer) or two (senior developer) of the following: Perl, Python, Javascript.
-Client-side web development: Javascript, HTML, CSS, AJAX.
-Familiarity with Linux, shell scripting.
-Experience of working with relational databases.
-Experience of OO programming and design and, for a senior developer, ORM.
-Experience of design and development and interest to data visualisation and GUI.
-Use of version control software (Git, SVN).
-Understanding of MVC design pattern.
-For a senior developer, experience of full software lifecycle and working with end users and other stakeholders, such as, for example, requirements gathering, GUI evaluation, user support, etc

All candidates should also:

-have good written and verbal communication skills,
-be highly motivated, self-starting and goal oriented,
-demonstrate attention to detail,
-be comfortable to work both on their own and as a part of a team.

Ideal Skills

-Agile development experience
- Knowledge of C or Java
-Test automation
-Experience of working with large data sets Web services development Perl Moose, DBIx::Class, Catalyst jQuery, d3, requireJS, node.js

Other information

The Genome Campus is a 100-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall and is home to the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The site has become the British hub of biomedical science. The Campus is also home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.

The level of the appointment (developer or senior developer) will depend on the skills and qualifications of the successful candidate.
