Senior Distributed Systems Consultant

THIS CONSULTANT WILL HAVE TWO MAJOR TASKS:

- Update the idle virtual machine detection system which was made last year to work with the newer version of OpenNebula which had a significant restructuring of its monitoring system
- Produce a prototype of a system which can automatically convert RAW or QCOW2 virtual image files to image files which can be uploaded to Amazon AWS.

SCOPE OF WORK: The consultant will be responsible for some or all of the following area of work in the Cloud project

- Idle VM Detection system features
- Understand Cloud architecture; get familiar with major tools and components.  Meet with team to discuss any new features that should be added
- Work with operations staff to re-activate existing idle VM detection system and with developers to understand new monitoring structure of OpenNebula 4.4
- Write and test monitoring plugins in OpenNebula 4.4
- Work with operations team for successful deployment, documentation, and design considerations to extend to other clouds
- VM transfer service features
- Familiarize self with existing manual procedure to convert Cloud to AWS and successfully manually
- Design (or find existing service) which can automate the transfer
- Implement service and test with user virtual machines
- Documentation and modification of service based on feedback from team

REQUIREMENTS:

- Bachelor's degree in science with 5+ years of related working experience.
- Experience with development, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of distributed systems on Linux
- Experience with Cloud-related technologies and computing in an Infrastructure-as-a-Service environment
- Solid knowledge of Java, python or ruby, and UNIX Shell Scripting
- Experience in the definition of web-enabled protocols, such as Web Services or REST.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with only general directions from a supervisor
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with OpenNebula is a plus.
