The IT Service department at Queen Mary University are looking for an enthusiastic IT Officer with specialist expertise in server and desktop administration. The post holder will be accountable for delivery of a high quality, robust, resilient service for the Unix services principally for the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and the faculty of Science and Engineering.

Responsibilities of the Science and Engineering IT Officer (Support, IT, Linux):

• Manage the Unix infrastructure for the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science
• Providing advice and guidance on the specification of IT server and desktop equipment to support researchers
• Assist in the procurement and order tracking of equipment and liaison with vendors
• Installation of IT server and desktop equipment based on academic needs
• Operating system installation and on-going day-to-day management
• Organisation, monitoring and capacity planning of our data centre spaces
• Monitoring of and reporting on IT equipment
• Documentation and training end-users and other administrators
• Troubleshooting with end-users and other key IT staff
• Ensuring Unix systems are fully patched and maintaining a high level of IT availability and security.

Essential experience and skillset required for the Science and Engineering IT Officer (Support, IT, Linux)

• Degree and/or professional qualification science, engineering, computer science, or IT subject, or significant practical experience in Linux
• Computing professional with substantial relevant expertise in IT infrastructure particularly relating to x86 server and desktop equipment
• Experience of accountability for delivering an IT service in a complex multi-user environment e.g. students, academic and administrative staff
• Recent experience (> 2 years) deploying and administrating Redhat or Redhat derived linux servers and/or desktops
• Significant experience in operating systems patch deployment and processes
• Good experience working with lights out management controllers, performing firmware upgrades and carrying out remote support
• Good Linux administration skills, including scripting abilities (bash, perl or python)
• Understanding of automated configuration and deployment systems for Windows and Linux. E.g. puppet, chef, foreman, Spacewalk/RHN
• Knowledge of performance monitoring tools for servers and storage
• Understanding of modern filesystems such as NTFS, Ext4, Bttrfs and XFS
• Demonstrable knowledge of LAN and WAN network topologies within a data centre environment

Desirable experience and skillset required for the Science and Engineering IT Officer (Support, IT, Linux)
