Safety Engineer

Essential Skills
Suitably qualified System Safety Engineer possessing:
. Five years' experience of safety engineering;
. A technical degree and either chartered or working towards chartership;
. Experience of producing Safety Case Reports;
. Experience of Safety Argument development, using diagrammatic representation where suitable eg Goal-Structuring Notation (GSN) or Claims-Argument-Evidence (CAE);
. Up-to-date knowledge of MOD Policy and UK (and other relevant) legislation concerning Functional Safety and Health & Safety (eg: Def Stan 00-56, ASEMS (POSMS
. Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Safety engineering techniques:
- Hazard Identification (HAZID);
- Hazard Log development and management (eg using eCassandra);
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)/Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA);
- Demonstrating functional safety;
- Occupational Health Hazard Analysis (OHHA);

. SC clearance (as a minimum) is required.

Desirable Skills 
. Familiarity with MOD equipment installations on land and in maritime scenarios;
. Knowledge and experience of demonstrating functional/software safety;
. Additional safety engineering techniques including:
- Functional Failure Analysis (FFA);
- Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (OSHA);

. Knowledge and experience of environmental hazards and risk management, including familiarity with relevant legislation (eg: JSP 418).

Day to Day Responsibilities
Provide the safety assessments undertaken within the assigned workstream, which will involve the following activities:
. Advising projects on programme safety policies;
. Liaison with Design Teams;
. Participation in internal and customer safety meetings;
. Identification and analysis of potential safety and environmental risks and mitigation;
. Support to customer to manage their eCassandra hazard log;
. Review and collation of safety assurance evidence;
. Maintenance and production of Safety and Environmental Case Reports (SECRs) and related safety documentation.
