Contract Position

Yodel are embarking on an extremely exciting programme of work to replace their current core IT applications with a new purpose built solution.The programme of work is to commence immediately and will run through a number of phased deliverables over a period of 2 years. As part of this programme a number of roles have been identified as pivotal to its success.

The Ruby on Rails Developer will be expected to work as part of the Customer team, this will involve the development of a number of strategic web portals and sites that will service different user communities. Currently Yodel employees and clients have an array of systems that they rely on to complete their jobs/interactions with Yodel. The strategic portals will provide single platforms for all tasks or interactions and as such need to be designed and implemented with particular attention to UX, usability, scalability, high availability and maintainability, following Industry standard development processes.

Main Activities and Responsibilities

- Design and development of Web applications that are highly useable and intuitive, adhering to web and accessibility standards.
- Develop and design performant, scalable and highly available web applications that follow best practice design patterns.
- Work closely with the Team Lead and other technical experts within Yodel to ensure all systems designed and developed adhere to Yodels development and architectural standards.
- Being part of the full Software Development Lifecycle; an ideal candidate would be comfortable with both agile and waterfall methodologies.
- Work in an agile manner as part of a rapid delivery team.
- Ensure development and unit testing are carried out to a high level using company development standards

Essential Experience

- 2 years plus preferred in supporting and developing new or existing web applications.
- Experience of the following technologies

o Ruby
o Rails 3+
o Javascript(and related frameworks)
o MySQL
o Capistrano
o HTML, HTML5, responsive application design.
o CSS
o Ruby APIs (Grape, Sinatra)
- Use code version control systems as an integral part of your development process.

Desirable Experience

- Experience with Agile Development methodologies.
- Experience with using Continuous Integration and Automation.
- Experience of BDD and TDD concepts.
- Good appreciate for UX concepts and principles.
- Experience of reviewing web sites and applications using analytics packages such as Google Analytics and New Relic.
- Be comfortable with GIT and SVN.
- Designing, developing or extending a plugin based web portal framework.
- Be experienced in working in an agile development team that has to interface with others using waterfall.

The work will be primarily based in Liverpool (the IT centre) however the customer base is Midlands and so travel may be required for project meetings and reviews as defined by the Project.
