Research Software Engineer - HP Labs, Bristol

HP Labs is the corporate research arm of HP, the world's leading Information technology company. At HP Labs we conduct high-impact research into the challenges and opportunities facing our customers and society in the next decade. Our research in HP Labs in Bristol is focused on security and cloud research areas. We are expanding our team working on a major European research project that aims to develop and deploy a new architecture which offloads security applications, system configuration and policy enforcement from client endpoint devices towards the network edge to help protect users (personal and enterprise) from current and future Internet threats. We are seeking an innovative researcher to join the team, responsible for contributing to research in the design and development of the architecture. This is contract is for 3 years, and would be a fantastic opportunity for a post-doc researcher searching for a role in industry. Strong candidates will be excellent team players, will provide innovative solutions to current research problems and also be highly productive software engineers. Good interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates will be expected to take direct ownership for developing potential product features and seeing them through from design to deployment, working closely with other members of the project in across Europe.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to security research in architecture development and distributed systems design
- Software design and development through the complete software life cycle
- Leading/owning the design, development, documentation and delivery of product features

Qualifications
- Post-doctorate in computer science or computer security preferred, although will consider bachelor's or higher degree in a directly relevant technical discipline (such as computer science or software engineering), or equivalent experience.
- Proven track record of software development.
- Existing research in security is also preferable.

Knowledge and Skills
- Good theoretical and strong practical knowledge of computer science and software engineering fundamentals
- Experience in a research environment
- Strong software design and implementation skills, the ability to think widely about problems and to consider all aspects and consequences of proposed solutions
- Software development experience spanning the complete software life cycle, including successful delivery of products or services
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, good presentation skills

Knowledge of any of the following is highly desirable:
- Trusted computing- Software-defined networking (eg OpenFlow) and network function virtualization
- Knowledge around areas regarding policy definition, conflict resolution and platform configuration
- Virtualization
