Research Engineer - Offshore Wind

This is an opportunity to join the newly formed R&D UK Centre established in January 2010, designed to support the Business and prepare for the future. The UK is a very dynamic environment for R&D and innovation in energy, in particular for Off-shore Renewable Energies. In recognition of this, the UK Centre leads the R&D Off-shore Wind project from the UK on behalf of the EDF Group.

The purpose of this job is mainly to assess Off-shore Wind farm costs (for specific projects) via the use and the development of the associated modelling tool. The job holder will be in charge of the cost modelling activity and will also identify opportunities for Off-shore Wind costs reduction.

Perform and ensure the delivery of high quality studies on Off-shore Wind farm costs and energy production assessment. Contribute to the Off-shore Wind farm projects profitability assessment.

Develop the internal cost modelling tool to rank different projects and to assess accurately the costs of a specific Off-shore Wind farm (scope extension, new functionalities …). Ensure the users requirement are fully understood and taken into account.

Identify promising opportunities for Off-shore Wind costs reduction (innovations and new technologies). Capitalise in the Off-shore Wind cost model

In liaison with the energy management team and EDF R&D experts in France , characterise the interaction of Off-shore Wind energy with the electrical system (intermittency costs assessment, contribution to the system flexibility, …).

Perform a regular UK landscape watch on influencing factors on Off-shore Wind (regulation, market, Off-shore Wind sector).

Establish strong interactions with internal stakeholders and sponsors of the project within EDF Group in particular EDF Energies Nouvelles, EDF Energy, EDF Energy Renewables and EDF R&D.

Critical:

Engineering or scientific background

Master or PhD level of education

Experience in cost calculation (CAPEX, OPEX, LCOE) and techno-economic analysis

Desirable:

Degree on economics (in addition to the technical degree)

Renewable Energy background

International experience

Use of a Wind Energy cost model (e.g. OWECOP)
