Well-trained material scientists (polymer scientists) with strong expertise in polymer characterization, polymer fabrication, and the evaluation of the physical, mechanical, thermal properties of polymers are encouraged to apply. Our work is focused on developing prototype medical implants and devices from degradable polymers. Therefore, a thorough understanding of extrusion, injection molding and other polymer processing techniques (such as fiber spinning, spin coating, electrospinning, compression molding) is absolutely essential. In addition, expertise in the characterization of morphology by microscopic methods (SEM, AFM) and knowledge of all standard thermal characterization methods is required. Knowledge of chemical surface analysis by methods such as ESCA/XPS or EDAX, and structural analysis techniques such as crystallography and spectroscopy, will also be useful but is not required. In this position, the individual will complement the efforts of the chemists and biologists in the group by evaluating polymers, processing biomedical materials, fabricating tissue scaffolds and other biomedical devices, and testing these fabricated devices as prototypes for eventual implants.
