Job Title: Process Engineer I/II

Location: San Diego, CA

Duration: Temp to Hire (6mo temp to hire)

Salary/Pay Rate: $40/hr , $80k per annum (commensurate w experience)

This critical position in the Process Technology group will interface internally with Company's fermentation, scale-up, and commercial design teams and externally with commercial partners, equipment vendors, and 3rd party engineering firms. Candidates with a proven track record of developing downstream separations process technology in the industrial biotech/fermentation industry are highly desired. Direct experience developing and operating industrial fermentation processes will also be viewed favorably.

This position is located inSan Diego,CA but will require some travel, weekends, and possible shift work during the demonstration and commercialization phases of the projects.

Responsibilities:
* Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to demonstrate and commercialize Company's BDO technology. This position will be involved in lab, demonstration, and toll-processing projects as well as supporting commercial plant start-ups.
* Use knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop process design options that continually lower production costs. Drive adoption of improvements into demo and commercial facilities.
* Design and safely execute experiments at lab and pilot scale to demonstrate new technology and determine unit operation performance for chemicals produced via fermentation.
* Evaluate the commercial feasibility of process designs by creating process flow diagrams, mass and energy balances, and process cost estimates (capital and operating).
* Lead sub-project teams in the development and execution of project scope, goals, deliverables, resources and timeline in support of business goals, in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders.
* Assist in the development of Company's Basic Engineering Packages for commercial facilities; define equipment sizing and specs, write process descriptions, develop/review PFDs and P&IDs, mass and energy balances, control strategies, operating procedures, safety manuals, etc.

Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering or related field plus a minimum of two years of relevant industrial experience. Advanced degree holders with relevant academic experience in lieu of the minimum 2 years of industrial experience may also be considered.
* Experience in the design, development, scale-up and optimization of industrial chemical production processes; preferably fermentation-based processes. Hands-on experience with multiple unit operations at various scales (lab, pilot, and commercial).
* Solid understanding of basic chemical engineering principles: kinetics, thermodynamics, transport, separations, fluid dynamics, etc.
* Personality and temperament to flourish in a fast-paced start-up environment.
* Travel of 50+% may be required for periods of 3-6 months to support start-ups of demo/commercial facilities and for other special projects, both domestic and international. Routine amount of travel is expected to be less than 25%.
