THE CLIENT: WORLD LEADER IN DEFENCE MARKETS

THE JOB:

- To work within the Structural Engineering Department, undertaking and leading structural design and analysis tasks in support of the company's programmes for submarines, ships or other programmes.
- To hold designated design authority for selected elements of submarine structural design.
- To generate structural configurations/solutions and provide supporting analytical assessments and safety justifications across the whole range of tasks involved in the design and production of submarines, ships or other company projects.
- Provide guidance, support and advice to the various project teams during the implementation (via drawings, models and production information) of design configurations initiated within the structures group or of configurations proposed by the project teams or design engineering departments.
- To competently select and apply current design standards for submarines, ships and other structures.
- To be competent in the use and interpretation of the computer based analytical techniques used by the department such as finite element analysis.
- To carry out structural design/analysis tasks in accordance with established quality procedures.
- To produce and suggest structural design solutions that are efficient and compatible with the economic considerations to design for production and cost reduction as well as the ship platform performance considerations to optimise strength/weight ratios.
- To maintain effective working relationships with all customer departments in the spirit of concurrent engineering and in order to resolve design or production issues.
- To present and contribute at internal and customer design reviews and to participate/present at external customer design/acceptance reviews.
- To remain abreast of relevant developments and technologies within the structural design and manufacture of submarines and surface ships.

THE INDIVIDUAL

- Calculations, validation reports and other design substantiation documentation for structural elements demonstrating safety, fitness for purpose and compliance with requirements.
- Design guidance and approval documentation provided to draughtsmen/designers to allow development of the CAD product model and associated drawings.
- Support to product/CAD model design integration process and reviews
- Support to safety, verification and validation processes and reviews
- Support and advice to production departments during build.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Preferably graduate/chartered status in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or related structural and stress analysis field.

Preferably experienced in the use of a finite element code, ideally PATRAN/ABAQUS.
