Principal Rail Civil Engineer

POSITION TITLE: Principal Rail Civil Engineer
REPORTING TO: Civils
- contributing to the engineering input to engineering (design and consultancy) projects;
- contributing to the engineering input to multi disciplinary railway engineering (design and consultancy) projects;
- Provide a strong technical capacity to undertake and lead others in the design and assessment of railway civil engineering including bridges, retaining walls, platforms and lineside civils.
- Fulfil the roles of nominated Project Manager, Project Engineer or Task Manager as required by individual projects. With particular reference to Network Rail projects, undertake the role of civils Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE).
- Maintenance of own working knowledge across aspects of engineering and contribute to developing PB company expertise in same.
- In all activities to contribute to the development of PB's business in the field of railway infrastructure engineering.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

- To lead, direct and undertake engineering activities within the group, in respect of both civils design and consultancy services.
- To lead multi-functional rail projects and coordinate work packages with those undertaken by other groups.
- To provide specialist technical support and assistance to rail infrastructure projects.
- Build and maintain good relationships with clients, and contribute to marketing of company to potential customers.
- Effective leadership of the formulation of proposals.

COMMUNICATION & TEAM WORK

- Engineering delivery with respect to both design and consultancy services.
-  To support multi-disciplinary rail projects and contribute to work packages undertaken with other groups.
- Key contribution to overseeing, mentoring, development and training of junior staff and to contribute to resource planning, allocation and utilisation.

SYSTEMS & PROCESSES/SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

Observation of all PB's own company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental commercial and project management disciplines and procedures, as relevant to tasks undertaken.
Compliance with Network Rail's standards covering design, Health and Safety and operating procedures.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

WORK EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

- A working knowledge and experience of Network Rail procedures and operations (including Group and Line Standards).
- Experience in the assessment, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design of civil engineering structures such as bridges, retaining walls, culverts and lineside civils.
- Design of structures/civils works to Eurocodes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Engineering support to multi-disciplinary projects within the Rail sector calls for a good degree of flexibility and willingness to travel to the geographically varied sites in the country.
- Site works are generally focussed around railway possession availability with a number of these requiring either weekend or night-time working.
