Context of the role:
The department is responsible for supporting the strategic planning and delivery of the services on our road network as well as being the organisation's interface with their parent organisation. The department includes the technical services, health & safety, sustainability and diversity agenda's for the organisation whilst also providing internal and external communications expertise. The Communications Group provides the organisation's wide support on all aspects of internal and external communications. The Communications Group is responsible for strategic communications planning across the organisation, to raise and maintain its profile and reputation. It ensures that external communication is delivered to a high standard, planned in good time and co-ordinated with other communication activity across the organisation. The group comprises the national and regional press teams, a dedicated communications team for major projects, digital communications, marketing/campaigns, and print, publishing, design
Role Purpose:
To deliver high quality communications to the media, road users, stakeholders (ensuring their needs are met and managed), and other audiences.
To contribute to achieving balanced and accurate media coverage for the organisation and building wider public understanding of the organisation's work.
To plan and implement communications activities and projects to raise the profile and reputation of the organisation and support its operational objectives.
To ensure that the most appropriate communication solutions are delivered to the highest possible standards and advise on difficult handling issues
Responsibilities:
Support the organisation's core business through taking forward opportunities and implementing activities and measures to raise the organisation's profile and reputation by applying knowledge and skills in area of expertise.
Develop and deliver high quality professional communications to the media and stakeholders. This could include commissioning, writing, editing/ proof reading, coordinating complex publications, media content and press briefings and releases, and taking part on a rota to provide a 24/7/365 media handling service.
Respond to media enquiries and brief media representatives ensuring effective liaison with colleagues in the organisation as appropriate, and plan and manage media events and activities.
Maintain effective forward planning and develop communications and partnership working with supply chain organisations, sharing good practice and coordinating activity
Provide communications and marketing advice to managers, staff and others
Essential Experience:
Demonstrable experience as a communications professional with a good understanding of the wider communication context.
Specialist communications knowledge and experience, underpinned by relevant professional qualifications or training
