PHP Web Developer with Java OO & C#- Birmingham - 12 mths

Capita require a Web Developer with expertise in PHP to join our Development and Operations team and work on our cutting edge and flagship resource discovery platform in Birmingham. The objective is to accelerate the rate of development in the use of Soprano for the staff interface within the libaries and to dispense with Windows Desktop.

This Web Developer will have a wide range of experience with various technical platforms, but with an expertise in Web development with PHP, to work on our showcase SaaS Online Public Access Catalogue and resource discovery platform. We are looking for someone who as a strong background in Web application development, who has a flair for web design and who is well versed in enterprise search technologies, such as Solr and Semantic Web principles - having a good appreciation for RDF data modelling and integration.
Reporting to the Head of Development you will be responsible for delivering new modules and driving forward the technical strategy of the business with an innovative and agile approach to software delivery. You will be required to work along-side the Web Application Technical Lead, to quickly establish yourself as a strong developer - able to make good design decisions, testing first where appropriate and writing reusable, componentised solutions and paying very close attention to quality at all times. You will be required to document all of your work with API documentation, system specifications, developer guides and user manuals. You will be able to present your work at any time for review and be able to justify your design and implementation decisions.
Although this is not a customer facing role there may be times when you will be required to liaise directly with customers and will be expected to uphold the innovative, helpful and professional reputation of Capita consultants.
As a self-motivated individual, you will have a strong interest in the web and web technologies and be prepared to push the boundary when it comes to technical innovation. You will expected to be an expert in PHP but also have an understanding Software as a Service, high-scale and multi-tenant web application design, large scale search techniques, web service technologies and Linked Data.
Today, most of our code is written in PHP, but we aren't afraid to use Java, Ruby, Python or server side JavaScript. Apache, Linux, memcached and redis all feature in our application stack so applicants must have the ability to demonstrate a wide portfolio of technical skills and languages, ensuring the best tools can always be selected for the job.

Pre-requisite skills

- Expert experience in UX Design in how to identify process workflow
- The ability to fully implement PHP v 5.6 as a language
- Full understanding on how to implement design and user stories
- A demonstration that you are self motivated to learn, such as a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or any other mathematical or engineering discipline but moreover a passion for learning and a desire for knowledge.
- Substantial commercial experience in a software development, having PHP as your primary development language and the web as your primary target platform
- Have a flair for web design and usability and be well versed in client side web technologies such asCSS and JavaScript HTML,
- Having a strong interest in Linked Data and a good understanding of Semantic Web technologies and Data Modelling
- A wide experience with a variety of programming languages. A good mix of statically typed languages (C, C++, Java) and dynamic (e.g. PHP, Perl, Ruby).
- The ability to take a flexible and pragmatic approach to language and tool selection, with a preference for open source.
- A deep understanding of Object Orientation (OO)
- A working knowledge of web services, Service Oriented Architecture and Agile development practices.
- A commitment to test-first development, automated testing, continuous integration and disciplined version control.
- A good understanding of relational and non-relational databases, query languages (e.g. SQL and SPARQL) and APIs (e.g. JDBC, ODBC)
- In addition to the above, you will be comfortable working with Windows, Solaris and Linux environments, regularly switching between them
- Automated test scripts with the support of the team

Desirable Skills and Experience

- An understanding of design patterns, and an ability to use them in order to provide rounder, more reusable solutions.
- Enterprise search technologies such as Solr and Lucene.
- Android Apps/IOS connectivity which is the next progression of the project
- Mobile Enabled Apps/ Wrapper Application on Android ( Web Browser)
