JOB TITLE:Phlebotomist

POSITION REPORTS TO:Coordinator of Specimen Accessioning

DEPARTMENT:Laboratory

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomist under the direction of the Coordinator performs procedures involving blood collection, washroom, central receiving, clerical, and limited technical functions to assist the technologists and technicians in performing laboratory analysis. The Phlebotomist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to age groups according to specific chronological age developmental age, and/or psycho-social maturity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

High school graduate or equivalent. Completed Phlebotomy courses and training. Phlebotomy certification required.

EDUCATION:High school graduate or equivalent. Successfully completed Phlebotomy courses and training/externship. Phlebotomy certification required.

REQUIRED LENGTH AND TYPE OF EXPERIENCE:At least one year experience in drawing patients of all ages (newborn to 100+ years) or documented minimum 100 draws during externship experience. Working knowledge of computers required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs blood collections according to the Laboratory Procedure Manual.

Verifies patient identification before collection of specimen following Laboratory Policy/Procedure.

Prioritize and organizes workflow to perform duties to have specimens collected and delivered to designated Laboratory area within turnaround time guidelines.

Selects appropriate tube(s) or other container (s) for ordered laboratory tests and evaluates specimen acceptability per area criteria to include Blood Bank, H
