Pensions Lawyer

Background
Our Government client is currently recruiting for a Pensions Lawyer to work at their offices in Brighton. You will be required to provide specialist legal advice and know how to support their client's regulation of schemes. This is a 6 month contract.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Key accountabilities/responsibilities:
- Provide timely robust fit for purpose legal advice to a multidisciplinary team in an emerging area of practice;
- Contribute to the development of a regulatory code setting standards for the governance and administration of schemes by their managers and pensions boards;
- Provide legal risk mitigation advice in the development of future operational policies and casework processes;
- Provide legal advice to support the answering of complex compliance enquiries from external stakeholders (including Ministerial departments, pensions boards, third party administrators and their advisers);
- Contribute to development of new regulatory and casework strategies;
- Provide high quality legal advice to embed public law risk mitigation measures in enforcement processes and procedures;
- Provide legal advice to caseworkers and support face to face negotiations to enable and where necessary enforce compliance;
- Review the publication of the outcomes of regulatory investigations and regulatory guidance;

Skills/Experience Required

Essential Criteria:
- You must be a solicitor or barrister qualified to work in the UK and ideally have 3 years experience working in a commercial or private practice or a regulatory casework environment.
- You must have drafting experience and an understanding of the role and function of regulatory codes, thorough practical understanding of the use and exercise of statutory powers and experience of contested proceedings before regulatory panels, tribunals Ombudsman and/or court proceedings.
- Experience of casework settlement negotiations; Standard Office IT software applications; Other relevant IT software applications.

Formal Qualifications Required

Desirable Criteria:

Relevant legal knowledge;
- Pensions Act 1995, Pensions Act 2004, public service schemes legislation and related legislation;
- Understanding of how to work with information gateways and familiarity with Data Protection Act/Freedom of Information principles.
