EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE INC. is a privately-owned company that manages and operates ground ambulance, medical communications centre and air medical transport operations in Nova Scotia.

Through a long-term performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services division, we deliver a high-quality pre-hospital care program to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,100 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses and medical communication officers as well as support staff.

PARAMEDIC

JOB SUMMARY:

The paramedic provides immediate treatment and transportation of the sick and injured to appropriate medical facilities. Paramedics are in constant contact with the general public, therefore a high level of professionalism will be expected at all times.

The paramedic will also be expected to conduct themselves in a safe and discreet manner. The paramedic will have the ability and responsibility for providing justification of conduct to the patient, family members, receiving hospitals, Medical Control Physician, management, public safety agencies, legal court and inquiries.

All successful candidates will be required to work in RURAL NOVA SCOTIA.

THE POSITION ENTAILS, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

- Complete an EHSNS approved PCP or ACP Paramedic training program and be eligible to register in the province of Nova Scotia as a PCP or ACP Paramedic or equivalent through Emergency Health Services (EHS).
- Determines the nature and extent of a patient's illness or injuries and other preexisting medical conditions.
- Performs appropriate medical care in accordance with the strict guidelines set by Emergency Health Services "Out of Hospital Protocols Policies and Procedures" manual.
- Operates the ambulance with due regard for the safety of the general public, within the confines of the motor vehicle act.
- Practices good hygiene and demonstrates socially accepted customer service skills, when interacting with patients, family members, other emergency services, colleagues and with the general public.
- Displays capability of decision-making and takes initiative as needed.
- Performs other such similar, comparable or related duties as may be required or assigned.
- Prudent operation of communications equipment and professional interaction with dispatch center within standard operation procedures.
- Working knowledge of and proper use of available personal protective equipment.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

- MUST BE LICENSED PCP OR ACP PARAMEDIC
- Completion of an EHSNS approved CMA accredited PCP or ACP Paramedic training program
- Eligibility to apply for EHS registration to become a paramedic in NS
- A valid Nova Scotia class 4 driver's license or eligibility to apply
- Must successfully complete the PPAT test
