Packaging Engineer

PACKAGING ENGINEER contract opportunity in Detroit, MI western metro. Projected 2 year assignment. Local candidates only.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Support supplier compliance, packaging re-engineering and standard pack optimization initiatives for inbound shipments for production facilities to reduce the freight cost on material with packaging
- Identify non-compliant supplier packaging, based on packaging guidelines that has transportation savings opportunity using current supplier packaging, route costing and load audits
- Determine the prioritization of the non-conforming suppliers using data supplied by others on cost savings opportunity on a part level basis to enhance prioritization
- Calculate transportation savings opportunity by completing Cost Analysis, Loop size calculations of returnables and standard pack comparisons. Collect and analyze data, for potential and existing systems, for system size requirements, transportation, and part quantities per container.
- Review proposed packaging for conformity to guidelines, part quality, material handling, and stacking integrity
- Set up test packs with suppliers for review at plant location(s)
- Develop schedule and progress chart for each supplier
- Assist with improving rack design to improve optimization.increase density of return shipments

REQUIREMENTS

- BS Degree Engineering such as Packaging or any academic equivalent
- Minimum 5 years experience packaging related to the automotive industry
- Experience in areas such as returnable racks, returnable totes, expendable packaging, and standard packs
- Experience in optimizing part density, unit load configuration and stacking for trailer utilization
- Ability to perform cost analyses to determine transportation savings
- Strong Excel and Access skills
- Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
