Museum Traineeships
Tomorrow's Heritage - supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund
Salary: Circa £14,800 pa
12 month contract, starting mid February 2013
Based: Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire
Chiltern Open Air Museum is an independent Museum and Charity with a collection of 33 historic buildings set in 45 acres of traditional Chilterns landscape. Following another successful year of the HLF Skills for the Future programme, Chiltern Open Air Museum is recruiting three new Tomorrow's Heritage Trainees. The posts are ideal for people at the beginning of their Museum/Heritage careers seeking their first full-time paid position.
There are three placements on offer, and you must indicate which placement you are applying for in your application. Please use the designated application form on the Museum's website.
1)Volunteer Management and Sustainability Trainee
2)Learning Trainee
3)Interpretation Trainee
As a trainee you will be given:
•A supportive learning environment, with a close working relationship with a supervisor. Your training programme will be individually tailored to allow you to develop your chosen skills and apply them to built heritage.
•Funding to study for the vocational qualification Excellence in Volunteer Management.
•Funding for an individual work-based project, which will give you the opportunity to develop project management and budgeting skills.
•A small training budget to fund transport to conferences and courses.
•Support in developing employability skills including preparing your CV, interview training, short-listing potential employers and accessing heritage opportunities.
To qualify for a Traineeship it is desirable that you have a degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. history, heritage management, museum studies, education, sustainability); as well as strong voluntary experience and proven commitment to the museum/heritage sector. You should also be able to demonstrate excellent skills in verbal and written communication, problem solving, teamwork and customer service. Please note that you must be willing to work flexible hours, and help out with practical, outdoor tasks in all weathers. Own transport is also highly desirable as there is no public transport to the Museum.
