Marine Systems Engineer

Role Purpose
The Marine Systems Engineer role provides Systems Engineering capability across the marine domain to meet the needs of Fleets Services internal projects and the customer programmes ie in the COMs (Class Output Management programmes).

Major Tasks and Activities
As a Marine Systems Engineer your main responsibilities will involve:-
*Conducting all activities in a professional manner design solutions to agreed time, cost and quality to meet project or business milestones
*Conducting a wide range of activities including feasibility studies, research, design, development and post design services, involving the full Engineering Lifecycle, to meet defined project or business requirements
*Ensuring that work is undertaken in accordance with Company, Safety, Environmental, contractual and local business processes, standards, procedures and documentation
*Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients
*Preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by bid manager in order to provide costed proposals for future work
*Maintain accurate records of all design related work in accordance with relevant extant procedures to ensure a complete design record of work undertaken
*Ensuring adequate integration with other engineering functions involved with a particular task or programme of work to ensure all aspects of the electro-mechanical system design are considered
*Liaison with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors and customers as required to satisfy the needs of project or the business
*When appropriate, the supervision of undergraduates or young persons assigned for training to assist in the development of their knowledge and skills
*Promoting the skill areas capabilities and department to attract new work
*Lead on Lifecycle Management activities and especially Design Review
*Adopt a professional approach to all design solutions to ensure knowledge and skills keep pace with the technology

*Agreed design change requirements.
*Design change guidance/technical documentation.
*Design change/enhancements installed and accepted.
*Certification in date.
*Evidence to demonstrate the safe condition of each ship.
*Objectives completed as planned.

Describe with whom the role regularly interfaces
*Fleet Services Engineering management team
*T23, T26, T45, HUNT, QEC COMs Engineering Leads and team members
*Naval Ships Design Authorities
*Customer organisation and Equipment IPTs
*Alliance Partners (incl. Babcock)
*Ship Staff aboard platforms
*Other MoD Stakeholder organisations such as Navy Command, MCTA (Maritime Commissioning, Trials and Assessment) etc.
*Commercial suppliers and customers

Delegations
*Design Authority delegation will be assigned by the Head of Engineering as required.
Company/Industry Knowledge
*Knowledge of the complete Engineering Lifecycle with some experience of operating in most of the phases
*Knowledge of key company and MoD engineering processes
*Knowledge of marine and/or defence systems

Qualifications
*Qualified to Degree level, or higher in an engineering or closely related discipline, or an equivalent level of competence
*Professionally Registered (CEng) through a professional engineering institution such as the IET, IMechE, etc.
*Have experience in marine engineering including working on military platforms and systems.
*Have a strong awareness of Product Safety and SHE

*The job requires the skills to interpret the complex requirements, put the right team in place and ensure that capability requirements are met. This will require sound mental and analytical skills
Additional Key Accountabilities
*Accountable to the Technical Authority Services and Engineering Functional Lead for technical excellence
*Accountable to the Chief Engineer (SSSP and CLS Ships) for ensuring compliance with Maritime Service BMS
