This assignment will offer you potential long-term career prospects, working with one of Steria's most prestigious Government Clients. You will work through Steria Recruitment for Steria, the UK's leading Outsourcing and Technology Company.

This is an exciting contract opportunity for a Linux System Administrator to join a very professional Team on a complex account and you will be responsible for managing Linux, HPC and UNIX systems on all networks in a secure environment.


- Routine hardware, software and operating system management of the following types of computer systems:
- High Performance Computing facilities
- Departmental Servers
- Interactive systems (modelling Servers and Linux desktop machines)
- Corporate infrastructure systems
- Ensure system configuration, performance and availability meets any Service Level Agreements that have been instituted.
- Carry out system performance and capacity monitoring using monitoring tools and regular system checks.
- Liaise with relevant teams to ensure effective integration of Linux systems with the corporate Microsoft environment.
- Maintain system security by monitoring reported vulnerabilities, assessing the impact on supported systems and applying required patches.
- Carry out software testing and installations to support customer requirements including:
- Open Source software
- Commercial off the shelf software
- Compilation and customisation of codes to suit requirements
- Ensure systems are maintained in a current state by identifying, testing and installing relevant Operating System and software upgrades.
- Develop, test and maintain scripts, tools and methodologies to improve service delivery and enhance system provisioning.
- Provide technical assistance and consultation on systems and software relating to Linux platforms for all areas of the business.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation to support systems.

The post holder must hold SC Security Clearance.


- Strong Red Hat Linux or derivatives (CentOS/Oracle Linux) in a production/commercial environment
- Extensive Server Build and Configuration experience, including automation of system builds
- Shell Scripting
- Integration of Linux/Unix with Windows environment
- Linux/Unix Security management
- Compile/install/configure and troubleshoot bespoke software applications


- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or equivalent qualification.
- Experience with high performance Computing (HPC) Systems.
- Solaris 10 operating Systems.
- Windows Server management experience (Certification not required0.
- Experience managing HP Hardware.
- Experience managing Virtual machines (VMWare).
- ITIL 3
- SC Clearance
