We are one of North America's leading international development organizations that works through volunteers.

ABOUT THE PARTNER ORGANIZATION

Zanzibar has made remarkable strides to improve access to education. The government of Zanzibar has built thousands of classrooms, recruited hundreds of teachers. As a result 85% of children start primary school and access to secondary school has increased significantly. Despite increased enrolment rates the quality of education is low.

All government schools are administered and managed by the MoEVT. The role of the Ministry is to provide management support to the schools, and also includes the deployment of new teachers. The Ministry is responsible for ensuring that all programs at school level are well implemented.

There are currently 4 teacher training institutions that train teachers. Teachers' in-service professional development has been decentralized to nine Teachers Centres (TC's). TCs support about thirty schools in a cluster and are centrally co-ordinated by the National Teachers Resource Centre (NTRC).
