CSIRO has developed world-first longwall mining automation technology (LASC) which is widely used in the Australian coal mining industry and international implementations have also recently commenced. The technology involves hardware, software and communications components, which are installed on mining equipment and as part of the mine fixed infrastructure. The technology is licensed to the industry through longwall equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as part of their product offerings. CSIRO retains a technology transfer role by providing support to the OEMs, and to a lesser extent the mine operators. Until now this has been provided on a part time basis by CSIRO researchers.
We are seeking a motivated Software Support Engineer to provide LASC support on a more focussed and consistent basis. The Support Engineer will primarily support existing users and existing licensees of LASC technology by providing in depth technical support for current and proposed implementations in longwall coal mining operations. You will also undertake software development tasks, supporting new and existing research efforts.
The proposed role will be important to the development of advanced technology for future and complex mining conditions in Australia.

SPECIFICALLY YOU WILL:

- Provide remote support to coal mine automation engineers and OEM engineering staff to ensure that CSIRO's longwall automation technology is operating optimally.
- Provide software support for new and existing applications developed by the research team.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO's reputation
- Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
- Provide instruction on activities pertaining to the immediate work area and responsibilities, as required.
- Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.
- Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO's Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

LOCATION: Pullenvale, Brisbane, Queensland

SALARY: $59K to $88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold a relevant Bachelors/Masters Degree &/or equivalent experience in industrial (ideally mining) automation or Information Technology (Software). Additionally, you will have the ability to communicate in a fluent and courteous manner, both orally and in writing, offering factual information supported by proven data, and providing appropriate feedback when required.

YOU WILL ALSO HAVE:

- Demonstrated ability in the design and development of software using C and C++.
- Ability to understand and diagnose existing software to effectively correct and improve existing code.
- Experience in Embedded Microcontroller programming using relevant compilers and utilities.
- The ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches for solving complex problems by identifying and considering the implications of a range of available alternative solutions.
- Proven experience in implementation of practical automation systems - research or industry.
