Background
Our Central Government client is looking to take on a Java Developer for a 12 month contract based in Exeter.

The requirement is for a Java developer to supplement the existing Systems and Service Delivery development team. The contract developer will be responsible for delivering the changes required to the user screens and associated business functionality. The SSD team will provide technical consistency to ensure that the delivered code is fully understood and entirely supportable within the SSD team.

The contract developer will undertake development of Maternity ability to explain complex issues simply; ability to write reports, specifications and software documentation

Technical Knowledge and Skills
1. Proficient in Software Development - expertise equivalent to degree level in the design, development, and maintenance of software to meet the complex business needs
2. Proficient in software development using Java 5, Spring3 and Maven in a multi-tiered environment exploiting IBM WebSphere, Apache/Tomcat and connecting to Oracle databases, equivalent to degree level.
3. Specialist Advice - provide advice, assistance and guidance to the team and wider organisation
4. Analytical Thinking - acquiring strong understanding of the underlying issues in complex problems or situations
5. Proficient in Software (Unit) Testing - ability to unit test code rigorously using appropriate methods and tools including the testing of web-page functionality.
6. Familiar with Industry and Professional Standards in software development and design - the awareness of standards and the ability to apply them in all areas of your work, particularly when applied to the production of maintainable software.

Desirable Competencies
1. Experience of using Eclipse or Netbeans IDEs for software development, SVN with Jenkins, Apache Tiles
2. Aware of Operating Systems - "System" software which controls activities such as input, output, dynamic resource allocation and error reporting within the operation of a computer configuration Example: HPUX 11, Linux 2.6.9.
3. Aware of Corporate, Industry and Professional Standards - Standards associated with the IS practitioners current role. Examples: departmental programming standards and help desk procedures, corporate quality management system, IT Infrastructure Library, TickIT
4. Aware of Operating Infrastructure - Knowledge of the IS Infrastructure (hardware, databases, operating systems, local area networks etc) used within own organization.

The contractor should be educated to degree level and/or have equivalent experience, and attended relevant Java training and skills development courses.
