OPPORTUNITY:

We're searching for a HIM coder with one of the following certifications to support a three-month contract in beautiful Hawaii: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

In this position, you'll develop, implement and monitor departmental policies and procedures while ensuring compliance and current status with policies and procedures, state/federal and medical/legal regulations, and accrediting requirements. You'll also plan and establish departmental goals and develop and maintain a quality/performance improvement program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Establishes controls and monitors activities to ensure quality of work performed and efficiency of operations. Takes corrective action and/or makes recommendations as appropriate.
- Collaborates with management, Corporate Compliance department, other departments, and external contacts, such as Peer Review Organizations (PRO), third-party payors, fiscal intermediaries, physicians, external coding auditors, etc., coding-related matters.
- Audits and validates coding and abstracting performed by staff.
- Conducts routine quality reviews of ICD-9CM and CPT-4 coding. Formulates and submits reports of the quality review results to management.
- Develops, coordinates, and implements in-service and training programs to develop staff and provide training to departments and external stakeholders.
- Monitors programs to ensure effectiveness in meeting needs of the department.
- Serves as a resource and provides expertise to staff, management, and departments regarding current ICD-9-CM/CPT-4, outpatient and inpatient prospective payment systems, coding compliance, and other coding issues.
- Identifies potential issues/concerns, resolves and/or makes recommendations to management and departments relating to health record coding/abstracting.
- Makes determinations and prepares written response/documentation to third-party payor, PRO, fiscal intermediary, and other types of audit requests or payment denials.
- Collaborates with the Medical Record Data Coordinator on abstracting requirements. Directs and monitors proper abstracting by the coder/abstractors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.
- In-depth knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT4/HCPCS, DRG, and APC coding.
- Bachelor's degree in medical records or health related field preferred.
- Three year of experience in ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding of inpatient and outpatient medical records.
- Recent supervisory/management experience.
- Familiarity computerized medical records systems, spreadsheets, and word processing programs.
- Expertise in medical records coding, abstracting, reimbursement, and compliance.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathology.
- Skill and ability to manage employees effectively to meet goals and objectives.
- Skill and ability in developing education and training programs and materials.
